Some added thoughts on things that happened over the course of the two day show.... Good car counts in the Modified division, with 47 Mods on hand. 4 of them blew engines in practice and left before qualifying. The rest were whittled down through time trails, heat races, 2 consolation races, and a last chance race, where only the winner qualifies to either take a check, or start last in the feature. As in the past, the winner, Danny Bohn, electing to start last. That paid off, as he survived to finish 15th in the 33 car field... I don't usually report this sort of thing, but it needs to be noted: Not so lucky was the newest resident of Stateville, NC, who got in a tangle during the running of the feature, and proceeded to get out of his car, ON THE TRACK during the caution, and exhibit the behavior that has made him unwelcome at a few tracks on the Northeast. He shall remain nameless, but you can all guess.... Fast time trialer Chuck Hossfeld was eliminated in an incident early in the race involving Matt Hirschman, Keith Rocco, Eric Beers, Ted Christopher and others, bringing out a red flag for 13 minutes while the track was cleaned up. Victory went to Burt Myers, who drove a head's up race, able to avoid the mayhem, and taking his 2nd N/S Shootout victory in a row for the 'Dirty South' team... The SK type Mods started off looking good, be reverted to the usual caution filled event all have come to expect.... The TBARA Sprint cars put on one great 30 lap feature race, seemingly running as fast as the Super Modifieds had in previous years, and thoroughly entertained the crowd on hand. While their feature was marred with yellows, when they were running, they held everyone's attention with their 13 second laps. I hope they are invited back for future events, and it would have been nice to get some PR, but their rep never visited the pressbox. Sad...... The Super Late Models were just that, super, and the feature event proved to be a very competitive race, with sentimental favorite local driver, Jeff Fultz, whose son had died the previous week in an auto accident, the winner after taking the lead with 73 laps in the books, and never being challenged right through the end of the 125 lap race.... Good crowd on hand, as usual, even though the Dirt Track at Lowes was running a World of Outlaws weekend against this event at Concord Speedway.
Just a few thoughts for now. More later as they come up.
