ISMA & Oswego Supermodified Champion Joe Gosek Ready to Tackle Triple Crown Championship Series

OSWEGO, NY (March 20, 2017) – Twice an International Supermodified Association and Oswego Speedway Supermodified track champion, Joe Gosek is ready to relive the days of old as he prepares to compete in wing and non-wing Supermodified action as a part of the inaugural Shea Concrete Triple Crown Championship Series presented by ASI Racewear.

A winner of over 70 Supermodified events in his career between the ISMA and Oswego trails, Gosek comes from the days when nearly all competitors would chase the ISMA circuit while running weekly at Oswego Speedway.  Now he will have the opportunity to try it again, with a bonus of $12,000 on the line, as he wheels the familiar No. 00 in each series.

Gosek’s entry into the TCCS makes him the seventh driver to officially join the ultimate challenge in Supermodified racing, battling with the likes of Otto Sitterly, Dave Shullick Jr., Jeff Abold, Dave McKnight, Dave Danzer, and Tim Jedrzejek.

With each driver listed a champion of some form, Gosek stands out among the rest as the only active driver that has won all three Supermodified Classics – the Sandusky Hy-Miler Nationals, Oswego’s Budweiser International Classic, and the Star Speedway Classic.

Scoring ISMA championships in 1987 & 2000 and Oswego titles in 2003 & 2011, ‘Double O Joe’ will put his Gosek Racing team up against Team Abold Racing, Morton Racing, and Danzer Racing in the race for the Jim Shampine Supermodified of the Year title.

“The teams involved in the series to this point not only make for a who’s who in the sport, but they offer a glimpse into the history of our great sport,” said TCCS promoter, Dan Kapuscinski.  “Joe Gosek, Dave McKnight, and Gary Morton competed during the cross over days.  Car owners Jim Bodnar, Craig Danzer, and John Nicotra were a part of cross over efforts in the past and the Shullick’s were a huge part of the allure of Classic events many years ago as they ran both wing and non-wing shows.  We seem to be building a solid following and I think the fans of Supermodified racing will truly benefit.”

The TCCS will see five non-wing Supermodified events at Oswego Speedway and five wing events on the ISMA tour including races at Lancaster Speedway, Stafford Speedway, Sandusky Speedway, and Star Speedway.

Triple Crown Series Awards to be presented at annual ISMA Championship Banquet at Turning Stone Resort Casino in November

OSWEGO, NY (March 18, 2017) – The Shea Concrete Triple Crown Championship Series presented by ASI Racewear will present its nearly $30,000 point fund as well as its Bentley Warren Supermodified Driver of the Year and Jim Shampine Supermodified of the Year trophies at the annual ISMA Championship Banquet held at the Turning Stone Resort Casino on Saturday, November 18.

A joint venture between the International Supermodified Association, Oswego Speedway, and Dan Kapuscinski Motorsports Promotions – the TCCS award ceremony will bring ISMA and Oswego competitor’s together one more time to finish the 2017 campaign.

“With the ISMA and Oswego banquets usually just a week or two apart it made sense to gather everyone at Turning Stone so the ISMA contingent did not have to travel to New York State twice in a three week period,” said Dan Kapuscinski, TCCS promoter.  “Banquet time is a great time.  I have enjoyed hosting each of these banquets for the last several years, and this year’s ISMA celebration will have a nice added bonus with the TCCS purse and trophies being presented.  I’m looking forward to handing out the awards and celebrating what we all hope is a successful season.”

As of March 18 four drivers have registered to take on the challenge of the TCCS campaign, which will see five non-wing Supermodified events at Oswego Speedway and five wing events on the ISMA tour including races at Lancaster Speedway, Stafford Speedway, Sandusky Speedway, and Star Speedway.

While points will be awarded at all 10 events only a driver’s best three Oswego point finishes will be combined with his or her best three ISMA point finishes to count toward the overall championship, for a total of six events.

Drivers or teams do not have to compete in all 10 events, but they must compete in at least three TCCS races on each series to be eligible for the year end point payout.

A minimum of $27,000 in point fund money will be split between two separate championships.

Half of the point fund will go to the TCCS Bentley Warren Driver of the Year championship, with points awarded only to the driver competing.  Drivers in this championship have the ability to run as many different race cars as they wish, on either series, in order to collect points.

The TCCS Bentley Warren Driver of the Year will earn a cool $6,000 for his or her efforts at year end with $4,000, $2,000, $1,000, and $500 being awarded second through fifth.

The other half of the point fund will go to the TCCS Jim Shampine Supermodified of the Year championship, with points awarded only to the car entry.  Supermodifieds eligible for this portion of the championship must run as the same built Supermodified in all entered TCCS events, on either series, wing and non-wing.

The TCCS Jim Shampine Supermodified of the Year will earn another $6,000 for their cross-over efforts at year end with $4,000, $2,000, $1,000, and $500 being awarded second through fifth.  The entire $13,500 Jim Shampine Supermodified of the Year point fund will be paid, no matter the number of eligible Supermodifieds taking place.

Under this format, drivers and teams utilizing the same driver and Supermodified across the TCCS could bring home a total of $12,000.

The Supermodified duo of Dave Shullick Jr. and Otto Sitterly will join forces with Bodnar Racing and Nicotra Racing to take on the Bentley Warren Driver of the Year portion of the series.  Both drivers will contend in Bodnar mounts for the ISMA events while driving Nicotra roadsters in the Oswego shows.

Jeff Abold and Dave McKnight will also contend for Bentley Warren Driver of the Year but they plan to do so in the same Supermodified at all TCCS events they enter, making them eligible for another $6,000 prize in the Jim Shampine Supermodified of the Year category.

At least another half dozen drivers and teams are expected to take on the ultimate challenge in Supermodified racing, with registrations not due until a team’s first event.

A LONG LIST OF CHAMPIONS RETURN FOR SATURDAY’S 51ST ANNUAL ISMA STAR CLASSIC

EPPING, NH- The 51st ISMA Supermodified Classic at Star Speedway traditionally brings in drivers who don’t compete regularly on the ISMA Tour and this year will be no different. The largest winged Supermodified field of cars in the east will once again converge on the historic Southern New Hampshire track this Saturday, September 10 for what is sure to be another memorable event.

    Former NASCAR Sprint Cup driver and 2008 NASCAR Truck Series Champion and three-time ISMA winner Johnny Benson Jr., of Grand Rapids, Michigan will run his first ISMA event of the season at Star as a team car driver to Mike Lichty.

    The 2013 Star Classic winner, Jon McKennedy from Chelmsford, Mass., will also be back. McKennedy will be competing in his first 2016 ISMA event as well, in the team car to 2015 ISMA Champion and current points leader Dave Shullick Jr.. 

   0U0A2003 (2) Last Sunday’s Oswego Classic winner Jeff Abold will also be in the field. He has a history of running in the top five at Star. Justin Belfiore won the Classic in 2007, and although he is running a limited schedule this season, he too will give the 150-lap Classic another run on Saturday night. The Ipswich, Mass., native is always a threat at Star.

    Chris Perley of Rowley, Mass., is also expected to return to the track where he once raced weekly in his storied championship career that saw him take six ISMA titles with car owner Vic Miller. Joe Gosek, the 1987 ISMA Champion will also make his first ISMA start of the season at Star on Saturday night.

0U0A0700 (3)    Mike Ordway Jr., is one of several favorites for this year’s Classic. The Fremont, N.H., driver has been running well of late in the potent Clyde Booth Supermodified, and to say that he is looking forward to this race at Star would be an understatement. This is the best opportunity he has had to win an ISMA Classic at his home track, and to continue his streak of top three ISMA finishes this season.

    “The car has been very, very good,” Ordway confirmed. “I grew up there at Star watching my dad and Russ Wood Sr., Chris Perley and all of them guys. Every Saturday night we were there when they were racing. I wish all of them guys were still out there, but now that I get a chance to do it, it is going to be pretty special.”

    The 350 Supermodifieds will also run their major event of the season with the Randy Witkum Memorial 50-lap race paying by far the highest payday of their season, thanks in part to many bonus sponsorship’s that have further increased the payoff throughout the field. That includes all 50 laps being sold, and paid to two different drivers running in the top ten on every lap. A full listing can be found on the track web site.

    Joey Payne will be competing in th 350 Supermodified race against a solid field of Star regulars. Payne, a former Witkum teammate will be in the potent 19 car, and he wants to win the race to honor Witkum as much as anyone.

    The Granite State Pro Stock Series goes 100 laps at Star as well, making Saturday a night with three major events on the schedule. The weekly Allen’s Outlaw Late Models, Woody’s Auto Strickly Stocks, and Roadrunners will add more very competitive racing with their features on Saturday

    The 51st ISMA Star Classic begins on Friday with ISMA practice at 5:00 PM, followed by practice time for the weekly divisions. Qualifying heat races for the weekly divisions begin promptly at 7:30 PM. On Saturday, practice begins at 1:30 PM, while qualifying on Saturday begins with the GSPSS heat races at 4:15 PM, followed by ISMA time trials and feature events for the weekly divisions.

Admission is $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and juniors, with kids 10 and under still admitted free of charge with a paid adult. Pit admission is $20 on Friday and $40 for Saturday.
