LANCASTER, N.Y. (August 27, 2016) – Lancaster National Speedway’s stock car program hosted its penultimate event of the regular season on Saturday night. The points races are heating up with just one more race for the weekly home track classes before the U.S. Open.
Jake Lyon of Elma, N.Y. came one step closer to the Sunoco Sportsman track championship with his third win of the season on Saturday night. The victory extended his points lead over Tommy Catalano, who finished third.
Bobby Lippa, Jr. and Jayme Thompson led the field of 23 Sunoco Sportsman to the opening green flag. The start of the race was bogged down by four cautions periods within the first four laps. Eventually the race resumed on lap 5 with Mark Pennell moving into the lead past Lippa.
Lyon worked his way to the front of the field from the tenth starting position. By lap 8 he was running second, and he hooked up with Pennell to pull away from the field. On lap 13, Lyon dove to the inside of Pennell going into the turn three and took the lead by the time the pair got back to the start/finish line.
The race slowed again on lap 15 when Tony Carbone got loose on the front straightaway and hit the outside wall. Carbone was on pace to post a career best finish as he was running inside the top five before the accident. He walked away uninjured, but his car was done for the night.
Tommy Catalano started the evening 26 points behind Lyon in the standings. After a less than stellar run in his heat race, Catalano swapped cars with his mom, Amy, for the feature. That move forced both Catalanos to start at the rear of the field for the main event.
Catalano made his way all the way up to third place in the Power Construction #64. By the time he landed in the top three, however, Lyon was ahead by nearly a straightaway.
Lyon cruised the final 20 laps to score the feature win for his third trip to victory lane in 2016. He goes into the regular season finale with a 44-point lead over Catalano. Pennell finished second between the two championship contenders. Shawn Nye and Neal Dietz, Jr. rounded out the top five.
Keith Flanigan of Hamburg, N.Y. picked up his second win of the season in the Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks. Flanigan led all 25 laps from the outside pole position to score the win. Mark Hoch finished second with Tommy Wentland, Brian Hoffman and Dave Wilson completing the top five.
Wilson unofficially clinched the 2016 Street Stock track championship with his fifth place run. Flanigan padded his slim lead in the race to finish second in the standings. He began the night with a one-point advantage over Jerome Hruby.
Bobby Woch scored his third win of the season in the Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinders. Woch passed teammate Dan Dressel for the lead on lap 11 and never looked back. Kevin Bainbride failed to reel in Woch in the closing laps and finished second. Dressel, Chris Pennell and Jason Anasiewicz finished in the top five.
Bainbridge clinched the 2016 track championship before the race even started. His seven feature wins helped him build an insurmountable lead in the standings. Dressel and Pennell are battling for second in points.
The Race of Champions Big 10 Super Stocks made their third visit of the year to Lancaster. Former Street Stock champion, TJ Cochrane, led all 25 laps of the feature to earn his first Super Stock checkered flag. Joe Mancuso rallied from being involved in early race incident to finish second and had a shot to win in the final laps. Timmy Catalano, Eric Hadley and Bobby Schosek completed the top five.
Lancaster National Speedway will take off for the Labor Day weekend next week before closing out the regular season on Saturday, September 10. It will be the final points races for the Sunoco Sportsman, Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks and Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinders. The NYPA TQ Midgets will also be in action for a final tune up before the U.S. Open.
The 28th annual U.S. Open is coming up the weekend of September 23-25. A full schedule of events and driver registration forms are now available at TheLancasterUSOpen.com.
