Coby Makes Late-Race Pass For Stafford Win

Veteran Gains Lead Late To Win TSI Harley-Davidson 125

STAFFORD, Conn. -- Doug Coby slipped past Bobby Santos eight laps from the finish to win the TSI Harley-Davidson 125 at Stafford Motor Speedway on Friday and became the first driver with more than one win this season.

Coby’s first win came in the tour's first visit to Stafford last month.

For the Milford, Conn., driver – who was making his 118th start – it marked his fourth career win and his third victory on Stafford’s half-mile oval.

The driver of the No. 52 Reynolds Auto Wrecking/Furnace & Duct Chevrolet started fifth but had to pit on Lap 27 under caution for a flat right front tire. He charged back and chased down Santos, who had won the pole and led the race from the drop of the green. Coby closed in on the leader with 10 laps to go and on his second attempt slipped by for the lead.

Santos held on for second, followed by Ron Silk, Todd Szegedy and Rowan Pennink. Keith Rocco, Ted Christopher, Woody Pitkat, Jimmy Blewett and Justin Bonsignore completed the top 10.

Coby previously won the Spring Sizzler at Stafford in 2006 and earlier this year. With Friday night's win, Coby took the points lead over defending champion Silk by five points after four events.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will be back in action when it visits Waterford (Conn.) Speedbowl for the first time since 2006 for the Mr. Rooter 161 on Saturday, June 23.

Jarett Andretti Lands Full-Time Oswego Supermodified Ride

Weekly Schedule Set to Begin on June 2nd

OSWEGO, NY (May 25) – After testing the Strong Racing Supermodified at Oswego Speedway back on Sunday, May 6, young Jarett Andretti hoped he would one day have a chance to race a Novelis Supermodified at Oswego Speedway. Now, he will have his chance.

Beginning Saturday, June 2, as a part of Best Western Plus/Quality Inn and Suites Night at the Races, Andretti will pilot the Shawn Muldoon owned, Jim Paternoster prepared, No. 1 Hawk chassis Supermodified on a weekly basis at the ‘Steel Palace.’

“I’m very excited to race at such a famed Speedway like Oswego, and it only makes it better knowing that my Grandfather (Aldo) and great Uncle (Mario) have raced on the exact same pavement that I will be making my Supermodified debut on,” said Andretti. “I’m also extremely happy that we were able to align ourselves with someone as experienced as Mr. Paternoster. With his roots in USAC racing, like me, it was an instant connection. Being a rookie, you want to be sure you are with an experienced team that has good equipment, and I know Mr. Paternoster will be sure that the car is safe and fast.”

The Hawk chassis Supermodified that Andretti will drive is a joint venture between long-time Oswego Speedway and USAC car owner Paternoster, as well as Muldoon, a former Novelis Supermodified track champion at the Speedway. Muldoon, who drove the car in the Oswego opener back on Saturday, May 5, will step out of the seat for the remainder of the regular season.

“Shawn has lingering injuries from his bad accident a couple years ago that never really healed,” said Paternoster. “He has lost a lot of feeling in his right foot, which doesn’t allow him to be able to feel the pedal quite as he should right now. He is hoping to climb back into the seat, after the regular season, during the Fall Championship Weekend on September 15.”

According to Paternoster, while Andretti will continue his pursuits in USAC Sprint and Midget racing, Oswego Speedway is the Andretti’s priority and main focus for 2012.

“Jarett will be here weekly starting June 2,” commented Paternoster. “He is coming up the Wednesday before that race with his seat to get fitted and comfortable in the car.”

Andretti is excited for the full-time commitment, and believes that this move will be vital in his development as a professional open-wheel racer.

“I think it is important to get experience in all different types of racecars, dirt and asphalt, like Mario and others in my family,” said Andretti. “The experience that I will gain in a Supermodified will no doubt be applicable to other open-wheel cars I drive in my career, potentially even an IndyCar. A Supermodified is the most extreme short track car in existence, so anything I drive on short tracks after this this will be a step back in speed and horsepower, making it so valuable in my development as a racer.”

The next event on Oswego Speedway’s schedule is the Mitchell’s Speedway Press Memorial Day Weekend Tripleheader Saturday, May 26. The night’s racing will feature 185-laps of main event action featuring the Novelis Supermodifieds, the Race of Champions Modifieds, and the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series.

Grandstand gates open at 1pm, with the first green flag scheduled for 4pm.

General admission is set at $25, with kids 16 and under free with a paid adult. Active Military with ID are also free.

Oswego Speedway events run May through September on most Saturday nights, culminating with the Fall Championship 75 on September 15^.

Coby Looks To Continue Hot Streak

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The results have always been there for Doug Coby, it's been the stability that was the hurdle. Fortunately for Coby, that's a thing of the past, and now he's a championship contender.
From mid-2007 through the majority of 2010, Coby did whatever it took to compete on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, which required working with seven different teams in just 25 appearances through the four year span. He had 11 top 10s and led five races during that stretch, but stability was not there.
Finally, Coby got the break he needed. Car owner Wayne Darling put the Milford, Conn., driver in his No. 52 for the 2010 finale at Thompson International Speedway where he led 25 laps and drove the car to a third-place finish. The result landed Coby his first full-time ride for 2011, a season in which he finished a career-best fifth in the final standings.
Through 20 races together, Coby and the No. 52 team have posted 14 top 10s and led laps in eight of those outings, highlighted by wins last year at Thompson and this year in the Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway. He backed up that Stafford victory with runner-up effort last time out at Monadnock Speedway and now sits just one out of the championship lead.
Coby and the No. 52 team now head back to Stafford's historic half mile, site of their most recent triumph. While two of his three career Whelen Modified Tour wins have come at Stafford, Coby's experienced mixed success there through the years. The runs he's had with Darling's team, however, have marked the best stretch of his career at the track. Following an accident in their first race there together, the four subsequent appearances have all produced top 10s, including the Sizzler triumph. In 25 previous starts at Stafford - where he's found so much success in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition - he was only able to put together two-consecutive top 10s once.
The TSI Harley-Davidson 125 will be the shortest of the four events this year at Stafford and can likely be run without a pit stop, which will put a premium on track position to start the race, yet another advantage that Coby will have. He's earned the pole in two of his five outings at Stafford in the No. 52.
Coby and the man he's chasing, defending TSI Harley-Davidson 125 winner and Tour champion Silk will head a stacked group of potential race contenders for Friday night's feature. Following afternoon practice and early evening qualifying, the Whelen Modified Tour will follow five divisions of Whelen All-American Series action at approximately 9:15 p.m.

Race Notes

Tight competition at the top:  With just three of 14 races on the 2012 schedule in the books, it might be a little early to talk about the championship standings, but it is worth noting the closeness of the competition at the top. Leader Ron Silk is just one point ahead of Doug Coby, who is three tallies in front of Ryan Preece. After three races last year, Rowan Pennink had a 56-point lead on second-place Silk with Ted Christopher another three points behind in third. The closeness of the standings should be attributed, in part, to the switch to the 43-to-1 points system at the NASCAR touring level for 2012.
Success with new teams:  Destined to be tied to each other throughout the season, Ryan Preece and Mike Stefanik have settled in just fine with their new teams. Prior to the 2011 finale, Stefanik moved on from Flamingo Motorsports to team up with Ed Marceau in the No. 66 and Preece replaced Stefanik in the No. 16. In the four races since Preece has earned four-straight poles, won last time out at Monadnock Speedway and currently sits third in the standings. Stefanik is just nine points back of Preece in fourth and has an average finish of seventh in his four starts with Marceau.
Preece joins elite club:  With the previously-mentioned fourth-straight pole that he earned at Monadnock, Preece became just the third driver in the 28-year history of the Whelen Modified Tour to be the top qualifier that many times in a row. Mike McLaughlin was the first to accomplish the feat when he took four poles in a row in 1989 and Stefanik established the mark to beat when he nabbed six in a row in 1994.
First driver change already made:  After just two races together to start the season, Daniel Hemric has moved on from the Hillbilly Enterprises to focus on stock car racing. Jon McKennedy stepped in last time out at Monadnock to become the sixth driver in the seat of the No. 79 since the beginning of the 2008 season. McKennedy is slated to be in the car this week at Stafford, but the remainder of the season is uncertain.

Last Time Out: Monadnock

The most recent NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race was held at Monadnock Speedway on May 12 in Winchester, N.H. Here are some highlights from the Whitcomb 200 pres. by Mobix & Town Fair Tire:

* For the second year in a row, the Monadnock race winner led wire-to-wire from the pole. Ryan Preece captured his fourth career Whelen Modified Tour victory and his ninth career pole at the high-banked quarter mile.

* It marked Preece's third pole in a row to start the season, and fourth-consecutive overall dating to 2011. Preece also set the Tour's qualifying record at Monadnock, his second in a row after also breaking the mark at Stafford Motor Speedway on April 29.

* In his return to the Tour for a spot start after a five-year hiatus, 2000 champion Jerry Marquis was unable to finish the race due to an accident and finished 22nd.

Up Next: Waterford

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will return to Waterford (Conn.) Speedbowl for the first time since 2006 for the Mr. Rooter 161 on Saturday, June 23. The Tour held 17 races at the .375-mile oval from 1985-2006. Raceday will feature afternoon practice and qualifying with the 161-lap feature - a tribute to NASCAR Hall of Famer Richie Evans' No. 61 car - set to go green at approximately 9 p.m.

TWIN 30 NASCAR MODIFIED FEATURES TO BE CONTESTED JUNE 2ND AT RIVERHEAD RACEWAY, BLUNDERBUSTS TO GO 30 LAPS

The third scheduled Twin 30 feature event for the NASCAR Modifieds of the Whelen All- American Series at Riverhead Raceway will be contested Saturday June 2nd at Barbara & Jim Cromarty's quarter mile oval and sharing the spotlight with them are the Blunderbusts who'll run a 30-lap feature event of their own. Both races will use time trials to set their starting grids.

The first two weeks of the 2012 schedule at Riverhead featured the Twin 30 format for the NASCAR Modifieds. Opening night Timmy Solomito of Islip took the overall win after Eddie Brunnhoelzl III was leading at the completion of the first segment. Week two saw Tom Rogers Jr. of Patchogue charge his way from a 21st starting berth to sweep both the first segment and overall win with his performance impressing many veteran race watchers at the 63-year old Riverhead speed plant.

Both Solomito and Rogers will be just two of many driving talents who will compete for the valued Whelen All- American Series points for both the New York State and National Championship. The Twin 30's have become a very popular race with drivers and fans and promoters Barbara & Jim Cromarty have announced that the Modified race on August 4th which is a time trial race will now become an additional Twin 30.

After a week off the Blunderbusts come back with their first 30-lap time trial race of the 2012 campaign with two-time feature event winner and defending champion Tommy Walkowiak of Ridge leading the charge. "The Wildchild" scored his 50th career win when he won his second race of 2012. Among those looking to keep Walkowiak from victory lane will be Tom Pickerell, Rob Bader, Bill Wegmann Sr., Scott Maliszewski, "The Pistol" Paul Parisi, "Krazy" Ed Mistretta, Jimmy White Jr. and veteran "Turbo" Tom Sullivan among others.

Completing the race card are the Late Models, Super Pro Trucks and Legend Race Cars with the Late Models running a 25-lap main event while the two other classes will go 20-laps in their respective feature events.

Completing the program on June 2nd will be a 4/6-Cylinder Car Enduro, the third such race of the year for the class that saw the 4-Cylinder and 6-Cylinder classes from years past combined for this season.

Gosek Eyes History; Looks to Tie Nolan Swift’s Supermodified Win Mark

‘Double O’ Joe on the Brink of 41 Novelis Supermodified Wins

OSWEGO, NY (May 23) – Two-time Oswego Speedway Novelis Supermodified track champion Joe Gosek has been behind the wheel at the lakeside oval since 1980, and over the years has visited Chris Nelson Insurance Victory Lane on several occasions; 40 to be exact.

A number of those wins have surely been memorable, from his three International Classic triumphs to his 1986 Memorial Day Weekend victory in honor of Richie Evans. However, a pending 41^st career win at the Speedway may prove to be most memorable as the Oswego native looks to tie Speedway legend Nolan Swift on the All-Time Oswego Speedway Supermodified win list.

Swift, a member of the Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame, had 42 total wins at the Speedway from 1953-1961 in the A-Modified division at Oswego. When the Supermodified class became a weekly division at the ‘Steel Palace’ in 1962, Swift continued his astonishing success, adding another 41 career main event wins in the open-wheel headliner putting his overall win total at an amazing count of 83.

In looking back through the pages of Oswego Speedway history only Ed Bellinger Jr., Bentley Warren, and Jim Shampine have more Supermodified wins than Swift. As Gosek looks to add his name to this iconic list and potentially tie the mark originally set forth by the ‘Old Grey Fox’, ‘Double O’ Joe is quick to recognize the amazing company he seeks to join.

“Those are guys you look back as the number one drivers of the day,” said Gosek. “I guess maybe you don’t look at it until you are winding down, but to be in the same record book with those guys is pretty impressive. When I started out those guys were my heroes, and now you are hand in hand with them as far as winning races at Oswego Speedway, its impressive really.”

Gosek, who picked up his first Oswego Supermodified main event win on August 3, 1985 in a 75-lap double point special, has not been to victory lane since August 21, 2010. The driver of the Burke’s Do-It-Best Home Center No. 00 sees a second career Memorial Day Weekend triumph, his first since 1986, as the perfect way to grab historic win #41 in another 75-lap affair.

“It would be something special,” said Gosek, in his Oswego, NY race shop. “Having been friends with Richie Evans, it would mean a lot. I didn’t get to know Jimmy too well personally, but he was so sharp overall as an engineer-driver-mechanic-builder, he had the whole package and I think his record proves that. It’ll come for us this year, if anything comes from the feeling I got the first week out, I think we’ll have a shot at many wins this year.”

In looking toward the future, Gosek sees another driver in the current Novelis Supermodified field as being the next shoe to potentially challenge the marks of Shampine, Warren, Bellinger and Swift.

“Otto (Sitterly) with the team he has, and I don’t know how long he’ll keep racing, the way he is rolling and with what you saw from opening night he is going to be tough,” said Gosek. “He drives hard; he is probably one of the most aggressive guys up there. He has got everything rolling for him. He has a great crew, great sponsorship, great team, and I think his team is the number one team and if you are going to beat him you need to be on your A game every time. Again, I don’t know how long he will race, but he has half as many wins as me and if he keeps going I think he will have a shot at it.”

In all of his years at the Speedway, Gosek has won nearly everything there is in Supermodified racing. With that said, the former Indianapolis 500 starter still has a couple notches leftover on his belt.

“We haven’t won a Classic in ten years,” said Gosek. “I like the long races and I would like another shot at Classic. I’d like to win with a wing on, which I’ve never done at Oswego. That’s tough when those guys come in from out of town, and we don’t do it all the time. This year though I am going to run those shows for Dave and Lori May and they have cars that have been in the Top 5 in the last so many shows here.”

With over 30 years behind the wheel at Oswego Speedway, and a strong supporting cast of characters behind him, Gosek plans no stop in his momentum for a least the next few years.

“I still enjoy it,” said Gosek. “It’s still fun and I still have that desire to be up front, but finding the time anymore to do it 100% is hard, but if we can make it safe and do the best we can equipment wise and financially and our results are decent that’s fine with me. I’ve done it enough where you want to be up top every week or you wouldn’t be there, and we’re trying, but when you look at the big picture you get what you put into it. I’ve got a lot of people that still love it and are pushing me. I don’t see myself going much longer than three years, I think there are a lot of other things I would like to do, but it’s still fun and we’re still competitive so that’s the two ingredients that keep you going.”

Despite not finishing the opening night main event at the Speedway on May 5 due to steering issues, Gosek looks to mark his next place in Oswego Speedway history at the next event on the Speedway’s racing schedule, which is the Mitchell’s Speedway Press Memorial Day Weekend Tripleheader on Saturday, May 26 featuring the Novelis Supermodifieds, Pathfinder Bank SBS Series, and the Race of Champions Modifieds.

SANTOS RETURNS TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN FOR ONE SPECIAL NIGHT

EPPING, NH- Back in 1998 a young 13-year-old named Bobby Santos began his career in full-sized race cars that today includes a remarkable list of accomplishments. It was at the Star Speedway, a quarter-mile track in southern New Hampshire, that he first set a track record. Where he first won a feature, then in a Small Block Supermodified. Where he learned to race.

"It was the only place that would let me race at 13 years old," Santos reasoned. "That was pretty much it. When we quit Quarter Midgets my dad was looking into moving on. He didn't want to go Mini Sprint racing. We didn't really want to do dirt racing. We wanted to stick with the pavement, and that was really the only place that would let us race. I'm thankful to the Webber family for that.

"I can't believe it was 13 years ago. It was a lot of experience and a lot of fun. I don't think I realized how fast those cars were at the time. You know, the speeds that I was going and what I was learning there. But I felt like it was a great place to learn for everything that I am doing now. I definitely miss racing there week in and week out like we used to."

On June 16, Santos will return to that special place he called home on Saturday nights to compete in the Exeter Decorating SBM 125 Modified Open, driving the Tinio Motorsports #44 Tour Modified. While Santos has run an ISMA Supermodified on two occasions since he moved on to win races and championships racing across the country, he has never driven a Modified at Star.

"It should be fun," Santos noted. "I enjoy going there. It should definitely be different, but typical Modified short track racing. I think just the experience of the racetrack helps. I haven't been there in a little while so I'm sure I will have to get used to it again, but I think that most racetracks usually come right back to you."

Santos used his experience at Star to help him gain national recognition. He is the 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion, the 2011 USAC Pavement Sprint Car Series Champion. He became the first driver to win in all three National USAC Series features in one year. Most recently, he "Smoked The Field" as the headline read, less than one week ago in the season opening event for the USAC Silver Crown cars at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.

"He showed great potential at an early age," Star Speedway track owner Bob Webber Sr., reflected. "It has always been a family operation for him. His talent at the age of 13 was obvious. He was not just good. He was really good."

On June 16, this homecoming for Santos will also be one of his biggest racing challenges. He will drive a Modified at Star for the first time against seasoned champions from all ends of the Modified world. Champion drivers Szegedy, McKennedy, Jarvis, Stefanik, Pasteryak, Preece, Cantara and Hirschman to name a few, will be his competition.

To understand Santos' ability to meet and beat this challenge is something that Bob Webber knows all too well from having watched him race at Star 13 years ago. It's something that track owner Bob Webber is looking forward to witnessing, maybe more than Santos is looking forward to returning, to what was his Saturday night home when it all began.

OSWEGO, NY (May 22) – Oswego Speedway’s Memorial Day Weekend tradition continues Saturday, May 26 with the Mitchell’s Speedway Press Memorial Day Weekend Tripleheader. The night’s racing will feature a trio of racing excitement, including the Novelis Supermodifieds, the Race of Champions Modifieds, and the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series.

Racing events will be in honor of three great Oswego Speedway racers: The Jim Shampine Memorial 75 for Supermodifieds, Richie Evans Memorial 75 for Modifiieds, and the Tony White Memorial 35 for the SBS Series.
