(Punta Gorda-FL Jan 19, 2019) It was a sunny and cool evening at the 4-17 Southern Speedway in Punta Gorda, FL. The “Wings N Things” 2019 season opener featuring the Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series was set to please, as the parking attendants waved everyone into the next available parking spot, and the long lines at the ticket booth wound around the parking lot.
The schedule for the night was the Southern Sprintcar Shootout Series Winged Sprint cars, along with their regular series Street Stock series challenge, TQ Midgets, and Mini Stocks. This is the beginning of the race season for most tracks in Florida ahead of the highly anticipated Speed Week races at New Smyrna Speedway.
On this night, Joey “The Ace” Aguilar took first place for the Sprint cars, besting Shane Butler for the win. These two certainly put on an exciting, wheel to wheel race as they completed for the top spot. Aguilar led most of the race after taking the lead from his 6thplace starting spot. Butler started in the front row alongside Dude Teate in this 18-car field.
As the announcer stated, once Aguilar and his “Keenes Site Prep, inc” machine got the top spot, no one was even racing in his zip code, until two cautions placed Aguilar and Butler side by side for the restarts.
The first restart allowed Aguilar to hold onto his position and place distance between 1st and 2nd place, however in the last caution restart, Butler found his way under Aguilar in turn one. With 10 laps to go, it sure was an exciting race to watch as they battled for the top spot to win the 40-lap feature race. With one lap to go, Aguilar found his way under Butler into turn 1 to reclaim the #1 spot and win the race by mere seconds of each other.
Tonight’s exciting feature was just a sneak peek at what to expect at the New Smyrna Speedway, as the Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series will run with the NASCAR K&N series on Sunday Feb 10th. This is the night the Tour Mods normally start to arrive for the 9-night World Series of Asphalt Racing event.
These open wheel winged ground pounders will certainly bring excitement to what is expected to be a full grandstand for the NASCAR K&N East Series 175 lap feature.
