Riverhead, NY Apr. 20thBy Bob Finan
Rain showers moved in over Long island in the early hours of Saturday morning and with a forecast for more rain into the afternoon Riverhead Raceway management was forced to cancel the first of two practice days scheduled at the track. The second practice day will unfold this Saturday April 27th and will feature free grandstand admission with warm-ups starting at 12 noon.
“Going to be a bust day” quipped GM John Ellwood as he looked forward to this Saturday’s practice day, “our schedule however will remain intact. Pit windows will open at 9:00 am, safety tech will start as soon as the haulers enter the pits and cars will hit the track at high noon”. One thing working in favor of track management and competitors is a high number of cars turned out over the first two weeks of April for safety tech inspection days hosted by the track, that should lighten the amount of teams that must complete that process before practicing Saturday.
Spectators will enjoy free admission into the grandstand seating area enjoying a sneak preview of what will be a very busy season of racing at Riverhead Raceway starting with opening weekend. The 2019 NASCAR Whelen All American Series will kick off with seven divisions of racing Saturday evening May 4th headlined by the NASCAR Modifieds who will run a 50-lap main event. Late Models, Crate Modifieds, Figure Eights, Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks and INEX Legend Race Cars. Opening weekend will be completed the very next afternoon Sunday May 5th with five classes of Enduro action featuring the Street Stocks and Mini Stocks. Rounding out the matinee will be a Truck, 8-Cylinder and 4/6-Cylinder Gut & Go Enduro.
