WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Eric Mauriello made one of his occasional visits to Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night well worth the effort as he raced to victory in the 40-lap Modified stock car feature race. The victory came on an evening scheduled to remember late racing photographer JJ Lane. It also became a memorial to long-time track worker and Racing with Jesus Ministries Track Chaplain Bob Menschner who passed away earlier in the week.

The Modified feature race came down to a fierce battle for the eventual win between Brick’s Mauriello and Tyler Truex of Egg Harbor Township. For much of the contest sparks were flying between the duo and at one point officials advised both drivers, through radio communications, to calm their aggressive driving actions.

Although several cautions waved for minor incidents, the attention stayed on the front runners to the checker flag with Mauriello and Truex crossing the line first and second. Eddie McCarthy of Brick, Jackson’s Steven Reed and Holmdel’s Andrew Krause, all of whom were in the battle for top spots for most of the race, wrapped up the top five.

“I have to thank Steve Ferrara and the entire crew for getting me back out here and back in the winner’s circle,” Mauriello said. “We probably shouldn’t have driven that hard that early in the race. We were racing every lap like the last lap.”

The Factory Stocks battled in two 25-lap main events, one regularly scheduled and one rain postponed from June 19. In the first race early leader Nick Catone of Brick and Neptune City’s Bryan O’Shea tangled on lap 18 with Catone spinning as a result. O’Shea then went on to the win over Manchester’s Scott Riggleman, Nick Kilmer of Howell, Robert Stack of Manahawkin and Farmingdale’s Doug Ashford.

The second Factory Stock race saw Kilmer lead most of the way as Ashford closed in late in the race. Ashford finally took the lead with two laps to go and was followed by Keith Flores of Brick who nailed down second. Kilmer, Rahway’s Billy Both and O’Shea were third, fourth and fifth.

Mike Lavery of Orangeburg, N.Y. made it two wins in a row in the 25 lapper for the Fast 4 cars over defending champ Ryan Maher of Neptune City. Point race leader Alonzo Morales of Burlington, Nicole Razzano of Cookstown and James Hall wrapped up the top five.

Parlin’s Larry Thompson became a two-time winner in the 25 lapper for the Sportsman cars, taking the lead from Chris Silvestri of Hazlet with an outside lane pass on lap 18. Jarret DiGiantomasso of Jackson, Jake Nelke of Manahawkin, early leader Silvestri and point leader Carsten DiGiantomasso of Jackson were second through fifth.

Buddy Sload of Glenmoore, Pa. won the 25-lap JJ Lane Memorial race for the visiting TQ Midgets.
