A New Weekend: Huge Melvin L. Joseph Memorial Mid-Atlantic Championship Set for Georgetown Oct. 27-29

GEORGETOWN, DE – A new kind of weekend.

Inclement weather forecasted from Hurricane Ian throughout the weekend postponed the 50th anniversary Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race originally scheduled for Oct. 1 at Georgetown Speedway. The event will now kick off the Melvin L. Joseph Memorial Mid-Atlantic Championship Weekend on Thursday, Oct. 27.

The race’s postponement injects even more excitement into the must-see weekend Thursday-Saturday Oct. 27-29 at the Sussex County oval.
The 2022 Melvin L. Joseph Memorial Mid-Atlantic Championship weekend will begin Thursday (Oct. 27) with the Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race.

J.W. Brown Logging Modifieds will race for 30 laps for a $5,500 winner’s share, while the Super Late Models compete for 25 laps and their own $5,500 winner’s share. The winners’ shares have been boosted by $500 for both the Modifieds and Super Late Models thanks to the Frozen Farmer.

The Blue Hen Dispose-All Crate 602 Sportsman and First State Chevrolet RUSH Late Models both battle for $1,500 winner’s shares. Green money has been increased to $125 for both crate engine divisions.

The Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Car Club, Little Lincolns, Delaware Super Trucks and Delmarva Chargers all join for 12-lap, feature-only racing.

On Friday (Oct. 28) the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Modifieds take part in 15-lap Qualifying Races for Saturday’s main event, which offers a record $25,000 top prize and points toward the STSS Halmar International ‘Elite Series’ and Hurlock Auto & Speed Supply South Region championships.

Joining STSS Modified Qualifying Races will be the Super Late Model time trials and heat races, the PA/NJ Spec Small-Block Modifieds ($3,000 to win, possible $5,000 with Gambler’s Bonus posted) and RUSH Late Models (20 laps, $1,000 to win).

The Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Car Club, Delaware Super Trucks, and Delmarva Chargers all join for 12-lap, feature-only racing.

The weekend concludes on Saturday, Oct. 29. The STSS Modifieds take part in last chance events to set the starting field for the $25,000-to-win ‘Melvin L. Joseph Memorial’ paying $1,000 for 16th and $500 to take the green flag. Both the ‘Elite’ and South Region championships will be decided in the event.

The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman join the Saturday program, battling for 25-laps in the Championship Round of the Belmont’s Garage South Region.

Super Late Models will also be on the card racing 40 laps vying for a $5,000 top prize (possible $7,000 with “Gambler’s Fee” posted). Super Late Model consolation events will be run on Saturday.

The Little Lincolns, Delaware Super Trucks, and Delmarva Chargers all race for 12-lap, features only on Saturday.

Georgetown Speedway, originally constructed by Melvin L. Joseph in 1949, is located at the intersection of Route 113 and Speedway Road in Georgetown, Del., just miles from the Delaware beaches and less than a 40-minute drive from Ocean City, Md.
