BRISTOL BOUND: Doug Coby Set For NASCAR Truck Series Debut at Thunder Valley

MILFORD, Conn. — At 42-years-old, Doug Coby has six NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championships, 31 tour wins and multiple track championships at Stafford Motor Speedway to his credit. Those are just a few of his accomplishments on his impressive resume — but this Thursday, September 16, Coby knocks another major race off his bucket list.

Coby will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut with GMS Racing at Bristol Motor Speedway driving the No. 24 Mayhew Tools entry in the UNOH 200. With no practice laps or qualifying due to NASCAR’s scheduling adjustments due to the COVID pandemic, Coby will have to adapt on the fly, as the Milford, Connecticut, native will start towards the back of the field.

However, Coby is hoping to rely on all of his racing experience — which includes a win in the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX Series) at Stafford earlier this year. On that night, Coby debuted, along with the rest of the series, in new cars, and beat the best of the sport, with names like Tony Stewart, Bill Elliott and Helio Castroneves. That victory helped him earn the ride for his Truck debut. And at Bristol, a place Coby has four top-five finishes in his eight Modified starts, he’s hoping to lean on the fast laps in the open-wheel Modified.

“I think Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, going over the race preparation stuff is when it’s going to hit me that we are going to Bristol and it’s go time,” Coby said. “I don’t have any reason to get stressed out about it, because I don’t know what to expect. If I adapt quickly and get comfortable quickly, we will just go out there and manage the race like we would manage a Modified race. We have to minimize the mistakes. When you’re a short-track guy and get an opportunity, you are representing more than just yourself. Suddenly your rivals become cheerleaders. You want someone from our level to perform well because it validates the tour and everywhere that we grew up racing. Any time one of us gets to do something like this, we are definitely representing the short-track community. To be able to go back to Bristol, it’s a very unique facility. It’s very challenging and very fast. I’m really excited for all of my sponsors and friends, family and everyone involved. Everyone is super excited.”

Coby’s Modified sponsor — Mayhew Tools — will join the Truck for a special red, white and blue, patriotic paint scheme that mirrors what Coby runs in events on the Whelen Modified Tour. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series UNOH 200 at Bristol is set to take the green flag at 9 p.m., live on Fox Sports 1.

Statesville, NC — When six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby makes his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Bristol Motor Speedway next month, a familiar sponsor and colors will be on his No. 24 GMS Racing Chevrolet Silverado.

Doug Coby will carry the Mayhew Tools name in a special American Flag style paint scheme that mirrors the scheme he runs for his own race team on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Mayhew Tools, a company based in Turner Falls, Massachusetts, has been a sponsor of Coby’s Modified efforts since 2017.

Coby, who has two Whelen Modified Tour wins to date during the 2021 season, and also a victory in the inaugural Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) event at Stafford Motor Speedway, is excited to showcase the colors and sponsorship to the Truck audience in his debut.

“It’s exciting for me because Mayhew Tools stepped up to help Mike Smeriglio’s team on the Whelen Modified Tour when I was driving for him, and they stood behind me when I started my own team,” Coby said. “They help me with whatever they can. To have them with me on the Truck with GMS Racing in my debut, it shows there is a strong commitment between the two of us. It’s a cool feeling to have people behind you that want to contribute to everything that you are doing. The American Flag paint scheme is a fan favorite and I am excited to showcase it to a national audience.”

The UNOH 200 presented by Ohio Logistics will take place on Thursday, September 16 at 9 p.m., live on Fox Sports 1, MRN, and Sirius XM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

“Doug has been successful with the Whelen Modified Tour and the short tracks and we are excited to support him on this bigger stage,” John Lawless, President of Mayhew Tools, said. “We have been with Doug for a while and not only do we think he has a lot of talent, but he is a wonderful spokesman for Mayhew Tools. We think he will go out there and do well and we wanted to be involved in his Truck debut.”

GMS Racing President Mike Beam remarked, “I am looking forward to watching Doug Coby make his truck debut with our team at Bristol in September. Earlier this year, I had the chance to work with Doug through the SRX Series, and his ability to drive became apparent right away. This opportunity is a big one for him, and we are proud to represent his longtime sponsor, Mayhew Tools, onboard our No. 24 Silverado.”

STATESVILLE, N.C. (June 18, 2021) – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion Doug Coby will pilot the No. 24 Chevrolet Silverado for GMS Racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway in September.

“I’m really thankful to have the opportunity to drive for a winning team like GMS Racing at Bristol,” said Coby. “My racing career has been filled with chance meetings where I come across someone who ends up opening another door for me, and last weekend’s SRX event at Stafford with Mike (Beam) was another one of those cases. For Mike to leave the event and speak with Maury Gallagher about putting me in one of their trucks at Bristol is phenomenal and I’m grateful for the opportunity to prove myself in the Camping World Truck Series. I’m really looking forward to working with all the guys on the 24 team at one of my favorite tracks. It doesn’t get any better than Bristol!”

Coby won the inaugural SRX Racing event last weekend at Stafford Motor Speedway where he was paired with team president Mike Beam as celebrity crew chief. Coby has 30 Whelen Modified wins to his credit and has made more than 200 starts in the series.

“One of the main goals Ray (Evernham) and his group had with the SRX series was to give these local short track guys like Coby a shot,” said Beam. “We’re blessed to have Maury’s (Gallagher) support to put these local guys in a truck and give them a chance to compete at the national level in NASCAR.”

Sponsorship and paint scheme for Coby’s No. 24 Silverado will be revealed at a later date.
