Williams Grove Speedway opened their 2024 racing season with an afternoon 410 sprint car and Wingless Super Sportsman double header on Sunday. When it was all said and done it was Anthony Macri adding an opening day victory at the famed Mechanicsburg, PA oval to their resumes.
Originally slated to start fourth in the 25-lap feature by way of a post heat redraw, Anthony Macri took advantage of an unexpected front row starting spot after a false start penalty pushed Danny Dietrich and Cam Smith to the second row. Ryan Taylor was lined up next to Macri and took the early lead before Macri was able to get by him on lap 3.
Dietrich was able to pull alongside the 39m a few times throughout the feature but was unable to get by and had to settle for second with Freddie Rahmer taking third. Long time 410 pilot Lance Dewease and newcomer Chris Frank rounded out the top 5 after starting 10th and 9th respectively.
“Superman” Steve Wilbur finished the afternoon show winning the 20 lap Wingless Super Sportsman feature. Wilbur was right on the tail tank of early leader Brett Perigo when Perigo made contact with a lap car nearly spinning and Wilbur was able to slip past. He was able to cruise the rest of the way to victory lane over Trent Yoder. Perigo recovered strong to complete the podium.
Williams Grove moves to their customary Friday nighttime slot this coming Friday March 22nd with 410 sprint cars and the ULMS Super Late Model Series.
