NEW EGYPT, NJ – First to Three.
Ringoes, N.J.’s Ryan Godown became the first driver in the Modified division with three wins this season, leading the final 10 laps of Saturday’s main event for the win on New Egypt Auto Body Night.
Godown did so with a CT525 engine underneath the hood, the new, affordable engine legalized at New Egypt and Bridgeport (N.J.) Motorsports Park.
“I just followed (Paul) Mancini to the front,” Godown explained. “He had the bottom rolling really well and I just followed him to the front.
“I was glad we got the couple of yellows because he would’ve been hard to run down if he got out in front and got away,” Godown said of Mancini.
The win, paired with a tough night for Pipersville, Pa.’s Danny Bouc, slides Godown into the top spot in the points standings, tightening up the lead trio of Godown, Bouc, and Billy Pauch Jr.
Bordentown, N.J.’s George Gareis Jr. and Flemington, N.J. native Bryan Kuhl occupied the front row at the drop of the green.
An early race mishap took Kuhl out of contention early, but it was Gareis who held firm at the front of the field, pacing the opening eight laps of the race, holding off several challenges from Sayreville, N.J.’s Dominick Buffalino.
New Gretna, N.J.’s Paul Mancini entered the conversation early, however, racing from fourth to second on lap six, chasing Gareis Jr. for three laps before making the move and taking the lead away on lap nine.
Godown wasn’t far behind, sitting in fourth when Mancini took the lead. Several midrace restarts shuffled things up amongst the lead cars, but Godown ultimately raced his way into the runner-up spot on lap 17.
“I put myself in a bad spot on that one restart,” Godown explained. “Fortunately, we were good enough to hold second there and then mount a charge on Paul.”
Godown ran down Mancini from laps 17-20 and used the outside groove to sail around the driver of the No. 7m machine and lead the final 10 laps.
For the second week in a row, Mancini settles for a runner-up finish with Schnecksville, Pa.’s Tanner Van Doren rounding out the podium finishers.
Dominick Buffalino finished in fourth and New Egypt, N.J.’s Joseph Brown completed the top five.
Finishing sixth through tenth, respectively, were Phillipsburg, N.J.’s Jack Butler; Hamilton, N.J.’s Johnny Bangs; Frenchtown, N.J.’s Billy Pauch Jr.; Upper Black Eddy, Pa.’s Jim Housworth; and Trenton, N.J.’s Davey Sammons.
Stockton, N.J.’s Jared Kreider dominated the Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series main event, leading by as much as nine second at one point during the race.
The win for Kreider was the first of his Sprint Car career and came by four seconds over second place finishing Buddy Schweibinz, who started last after mechanical problems in his heat race.
Mark Bitner, Eddie Wagner, and Troy Betts rounded out the top five.
In a dramatic Xtreme Diesel Performance (XDP), LLC. Street Stock feature, Howell, N.J.’s Chris Lane picked up his second win of the season.
It appeared as though Lane was going to settle for third, before Pat Force spun while battling Rob Ormsbee for the top spot.
The restart gave Lane an opportunity to get by Ormsbee, an opportunity he would take advantage of. Lane only led the final two laps, but they were the only laps he needed to lead, picking up the victory.
Ormsbee settled for second, with Scott Freed, Chris Allen Sr., and Brian Ludwig completed the top five.
