This Saturday night’s 7 feature Whelen All American Series show will be the end of two eras at Riverhead Raceway. As Long as I can remember 2 people have owned and promoted Riverhead Raceway, Barbara and Jim Cromarty. In August after months and years of speculation about the future of the track it was finally sold. Starting with the November 1st Enduro and Legends race the reigns will be turned over to new owners Ed and Connie Partridge. The familiar golf cart with Babara and Jim heading to victory lane will now be turned over to new owners. Barbara and Jim can retire knowing they kept racing alive on Long Island long after most would have given up and sold to developers plus racing at Long Islands last race track will not only continue but thrive for many years to come.
There will be a meeting in the pits at 4:10 when all drivers and teams will have a chance to say thank you for all the years Barbara and Jim have operated Riverhead Raceway. My guess is it will be an emotional meeting with lots of tears.
Also as long as I can remember back to my Saturday nights spent with my family at Islip Speedway there was always the #20 modified on the track with a driver named Bill Park. Later years after Islip closed Bill brought that #20 to Riverhead Raceway where he has been ever since. Unfortunately for race fans the Bill Park era on Long Island is too coming to a close. For over 40 years Bill fielded beautiful race cars all with the familiar #20. Bill has decided the time has come to retire as an owner. Bill raced into his 60’s but then retired as a driver turning over the driving duties to younger drivers like Ryan Preece, Ron Silk and Todd Szegedy keeping the #20 on the track at Riverhead Raceway.
Bills race car is for sale and whoever purchases it will strap into an top quality ride but it just wont be the same without Bill and his wife Barbara who is always at the track. Good luck in your retirement and come back to visit as often as you can in the years to come.
Come on out to this Saturday night to Long Islands last race track, say goodbye to three legends and watch the last regular night of NASCAR Whelen All American stock car races. 7 Features, 7 champions crowned and 225 laps of feature racing, pit gates open at 12:30, front gates at 3:00PM, Late Model Time trials start at 3:30 with feature racing starting at 4:30. See you there.
