Saturday May 20th the Whelen NASCAR Modified tour heads to the quarter mile oval at Riverhead Raceway for the Buzz Chew Chevrolet Cadillac 200. Buzz Chew has provided Pace Vehicles, sponsored races, and sponsored race cars for many years. Jimmy Spencer won the inaugural WMT event in 1985 and the track has hosted at least one race per year every year except during the 2020 Covid-19 epidemic.
Last year Doug Coby won the first of 3 races at the tight bull ring, Kyle Soper won the second, becoming the first Riverhead regular since Ed Brunnhoelzl Sr. in 1995 to beat the tour regulars. Kyle has stepped away from racing this year and unfortunately is not entered. Justin Bonsignore finished out the Riverhead races winning the Eddie Partridge 256 lap September race which featured infield pitting for the first time.
The Buzz Chew 200 will see a host of Long Island based drivers including the winners of the first two weekly Tour Modified races, Timmy Solomito and Jack Handley Jr. 2023 NASCAR WMT winners Ron Silk (New Smyrna), Austin Beers (Richmond) and Doug Coby (Monadnock) will all be looking for win #2.
Never to be left out of any conversation at Riverhead, Justin Bonsignore who has visited the WMT victory lane at Riverhead Raceway 9 times is second only to Mike Ewanitsko 11 wins. Justin wants to get back to the familiar victory lane.
WMT Regular and local driver Eric Goodale has already run 23 WMT races at Riverhead with one-win coming May 5th, 2014, Eric has completed over 4,400 laps and always has the #58 running up front at the end.
Big Money Matt Hirshman will return to Riverhead looking to shake his bad luck and uncharacteristic lack of wins. Matt will be back in the Pee-Dee Motorsports Elite Towing Baker Motorsports #60. His strong run at the Islip 300 in 2022 bodes well for a strong finish this Saturday.
Anthony Nocella looks to return to victory lane after taking his first win last November in the Islip 300.
30 drivers and teams have entered this weekend race. If you can’t catch the race live the entire evening will be broadcast on FloRacing with the NASCAR WMT scheduled to get the green flag at 8:00.
