The NASCAR WMT last hit the track at New Smyrna in February 34 teams looked to open the season on a high note in the New Smyrna Beach Area Visitors Bureau 200. Ron Silk took the victory over Justin Bonsignore, Doug Coby , Patrick Emerling and rookie Trevor Catalano. After over a month layoff the WMT heads to the 3/4 mile Richmond Raceway.
In 2023 Richmond was the track where young Austin Beers would win his first WMT race that led to a solid season and a 3rd place finish in the 2023 NASCAR WMT standings. After his breakout season Austin was selected as the John Blewett III Young Gun awardee by the Eastern Motorsports Press Association.
We reached out to Austin about the upcoming race and asked him a few questions about Richmond..
Are you more confident after winning last year’s race at Richmond?
” I am fairly confident coming back to Richmond with the success we had last year. We are just going to attack it the same way the same as we did last year expect I feel we are expected to run good this year and compete for the win. “
How does it feel to be one of the top teams on the WMT race after race?
” I feel the win at Lancaster kind of showed the win at Richmond was not a fluke, so definitely a lot more confident coming into Richmond than last year. Considering the success we have had with both wins and running in the top 5 most of the year and competing for more wins.
Has the long layoff since New Smyrna Speedway made you itch to get back to the track?
” It feels good going to the track knowing the competition knows you are one of the guys they are going to have to race with for a win or a good finish. A lot of hard work goes on with the KLM Motorsports team and they work very hard to get us where we are. I know the team is as hungry as I am to get more wins and compete for the championship.”
Austin went on to say:
“The layoffs are definitely difficult especially when you are watching guys younger than you Like Carson Loftin and Luke Baldwin run with the success they are having on the Smart Tour. They are doing a great job. So just kind of itching to get back out there and try to compete for more wins now that we are going to get into the bulk of the season here soon!”
