LAKE CITY, FL – Back-to-back.
Stewart Friesen remained on a roll with the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco, winning the second night of the ‘Sunshine Swing’ at All-Tech Raceway in dominant fashion.
The Sprakers, N.Y., driver led from start to finish in the 35-lap main STSS Modified event for a $5,000 top prize.
Thursday’s event was Race No. 200 for the series, which got its start on April 6, 2014, at N.Y.’s Orange County Fair Speedway.
Friesen’s triumph brought his win total on the STSS to 50.
“This series has been really good to us since the beginning,” Friesen said. “It’s really cool to be here in Victory Lane for number 200.”
Friesen launched off the pole after the Beyea Custom Headers Redraw and blistered the Sunshine State half-mile oval and 26-car starting field.
“It (the car) was good,” Friesen said. “It’s just such a challenging track to find a balance. We got some clean air there and I put together the best laps I could.”
Schnecksville, Pa.’s Tanner Van Doren overcame a battle with Matt Sheppard to place in the runner-up position, continuing his ‘Sunshine Swing’ success at All-Tech.
“I’ll take it,” Van Doren said. “Running with these guys isn’t easy. A lot of them are full-time guys, they do it for a living. I still have to go to school every day. That’s the hard part.”
Sheppard, of Savannah, N.Y., drove from seventh to finish third.
Danny Bouc of Pipersville, Pa., and Alex Payne of Canandaigua, N.Y., completed the front five.
Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were 10th-starter Larry Wight of Phoenix, N.Y.; Chris Curtis of East Canaan, N.Y., after starting 18th; Danny Creeden of Wurtsboro, N.Y.; 15th-starter Alex Yankowski of Covington Township, Pa; and Tyler Siri of Horseheads, N.Y.
Erick Rudolph was the ATL Fuel Cells Hot Lap Hero with a lap of 19.279 seconds.
Matt Stangle, Wight, Bouc and Payne topped the heat races. Consolations went to Jack Lehner and Anthony Perrego.
Boyertown, Pa.’s Logan Watt led only one lap in the STSS Sportsman 25-lap event: the last one. Watt darted to the inside of Michael Ballestero on a lap-24 restart to pick up his first Florida victory, worth $1,500.
Ballestero first fended off the challenges of Dylan Madsen – who ultimately was forced down to the infield by a slower car – before falling into the clutches of Watt.
Ballston Spa, N.Y.’s Ballestero finished second, followed by Spencertown, N.Y.’s Madsen, ninth-starter Derrick McGrew Jr. of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; and Quebec’s Donovan Lussier.
Paulie Hartwig III was the Fastline Performance Hot Lap Hero turning 20.635 seconds.
Heat winners were Jarod Millman, Payton Talbot and Watt. Todd English topped the consolation.
Racing resumes tonight (Friday) with the STSS Modifieds battling 40 laps for $6,000 to win and STSS Sportsman racing 30 laps with $2,000 on the line. Crown Vics join the program for the first of two nights.
