(Forestville, PA 4-6-25) Big Diamond Speedway has been around and going strong for the past 53 years thanks largely to the vision that the late Fritz Roehrig had when in 1971 he and his associate, Dom Muscara, who were noted racing enthusiasts, came upon an area near Forestville following a surface mining job and from that they cut out a race track.
They called it Big Diamond Raceway. The ‘Big Diamond’ name was derived from the vein of coal they had just mined near the same spot. In late August of 1972 the track opened for business and as they say, the rest is history.
Fritz, who also raced for a time, passed away in July of 2019 but his legacy lives on and this Friday evening, April 11, Big Diamond Speedway proudly presents the annual Fritz Roehrig Memorial Money in the Mountains.
Coming off a very triumphant Opening Night and the Thaw Brawl, Big Diamond Speedway’s Fritz Roehrig Memorial Money in the Mountains should be much of the same as a very profitable payday for the drivers who can pull off a win in the Quandel Concrete 358 Modifieds and USS Achey 602 Crate Modifieds is on the line.
The 358 Modified division headlines the night with a 50-lap feature that awards a hefty $10,000-to-win. Last year’s race was a terrific battle that saw Anothony Perego score a big victory ahead of Rick Laubach and Louden Reimert.
And considering the great turnout from last week’s Thaw Brawl plus the impressive prize money up for grabs, fans can look forward to another star-studded field of entries and leading the way will be last week’s winner Mike Gular who is aiming to go back-to-back, which of course will not come easy given the odds against his counterparts but rest assured he is highly capable of second straight Victory Lane visit nonetheless.
Also having the opportunity to gain additional first place cash will be the 602 Crate Sportsman division which will be racing in a 20-lap feature and pays $1000-to-win. This will be the first race of the season for the 602 Crates due to their feature getting postponed last Friday because of rain.
It will be a well-rounded night of racing with the Red White and Blue Autos Inc., Roadrunners and Big Creek Concrete Rookie 602 Crate Sportsman filling out the card.
The night is being presented by Dukmen Enterprises Inc., of Orwigsburg. They are electrical, landscape and excavation contractors who provide 24/7 emergency services.
Pit gates will open at 5:00 pm and grandstands at 5:30 pm. Hot laps will begin at 7:15 followed by heats. Pit admission is $40 for Big Diamond Speedway members and $45 for all non-members. Adult general admission is $30, students 10-15 are $10 and kids under 9 are free.
Coming up on Friday, April 18, it will be a regular show with all four track classes in action.
