Rick Lafferty never heard what Larry McVay said to him during the fuel stop at halfway. McVay told him to “keep doing what he was doing. You’ve got this.” And McVay was right.
Lafferty took the lead on lap forty-four, led the final six laps of the fifty lap Ron Faison 305 Sprint Car Nationals fifty lap feature and picked up the $4,000 win plus contingencies.
DJ Tanner led the race from the start until the fuel stop at halfway. When the race went back to green on lap twenty-six, Tanner had his hands full with the challenge of polesitter, Dave Grube. The two battled back and forth with Grube leading lap twenty-six. Tanner was back in front on twenty-seven and Grube was left sitting in turn four, bringing out the caution.
Lafferty raced into third, racing by Dave Brown on lap thirty-two. He raced by Brian Carber for second one lap later. Then he began to reel in the race leader.
A late race caution tightened up the field on lap forty-two. Lafferty came out of turns three and four with the lead on lap forty-four. Once out in front, Lafferty quickly pulled away from the field and drove to the victory over DJ Tanner, Brian Carber, Dave Brown and Kevin Nagy. Bob DeVault, Buddy Schweibinz, Tim Iulg, Troy Betts and George Loux rounded out the top ten.
After years of 410 experience, Lafferty began to work with Larry McVay last season. McVay gave all the credit to Lafferty and his father. “It was all Rick and his dad,” McVay recounted. “They built this car with parts that I had around.” The No. 83 was not painted nor lettered but it was fast.
The win was a first for Lafferty in a 305. It was also a first win for McVay.
Jasen Geesaman raced to his first extra distance win on the High Banks of the Bridgeport Motorsports Park. Geesaman has won frequently in regular Saturday night events but could only master runner-up finishes in the long distance events.
That was until Saturday night.
Geesaman grabbed the lead from his outside pole start and then drove away from the field to pick up the win in the fifty lap feature event for the Insta Signs Plus Street Stocks, sponsored by Roveta Speed and Mr. Blue Beard.
While Geesaman’s ride seemed effortless, it was anything but for Bailey Tolson and Chris Derr who raced hard for second for more than half of the race. Tolson had Derr on his back bumper or occasionally looking to the inside or outside but he never let up and raced hard to finish second. Derr finished third followed by Kyle Saylor and Spider Ensinger, Jr.
Kevin Heckman finished sixth followed by Shane Grosso, Mike Baldwin, Butch Heisel and Scott Freed completed the top ten at the checkered.
Wayne Weaver drove to yet another topless Ice Less 602 Sportsman feature, leading every one of the twenty-five laps on his way to the checkered. Ethan Young had a strong outing to finish second, fighting off the challenges provided by Trent Willey throughout the race.
For the ageless veteran, it was the third win of the season for Weaver. Young finished second followed by Willey, Duncan Molesworth and Charley Cossaboone.
Jonathan Swanson turned the tables on Stan Ploski III and picked up his third win of the season in the Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints.
The head’s up start had Ploski on the pole with Swanson to his outside. Swanson used the outside to roll into the lead. Ploski challenged repeatedly but Swanson was not to be denied on this night.
It was Swanson for the win over Ploski, Mick D’Agostino and Wayne Scott.
