Brandon Ward and the Kevin Powell Speed Motorsports team head into this weekend’s third annual King of the Modifieds at South Boston Speedway riding a wave of momentum on the SMART Modified Tour Powered by Pace-O-Matic.
That momentum stems from a strong 2025 campaign, highlighted by another NASCAR Weekly Modified championship at Bowman Gray Stadium and a runner-up finish in the SMART Modified Tour finale at North Wilkesboro Speedway. The team has carried that performance into 2026, opening the season with a victory in the Zach Brewer Memorial on February 28th at Florence Motor Speedway, followed by a solid top ten finish at Anderson Motor Speedway.
“It’s just a testament to what Will Spaugh and this KP Speed Motorsports team are capable of. Every week they give me a great car capable of winning,” said Ward. “It meant a lot to win the season opener for Zach at Florence, the car was perfect all afternoon and we started our season off right. Last year we won the Bowman Gray opener, which set the tone for our championship at the Stadium. I hope this does the same for our SMART season. The car was a little free at Anderson, but we still came home with a good finish and a good points day.”
Ward currently sits second in SMART Modified Tour points and looks to improve on last year’s King of the Modifieds performance, where he charged from 17th to finish fourth.
“We’ve got our notes from last year and things we’ve learned since then that we’ll apply,” Ward added. “The SMART Tour is very competitive, especially for this race. There’s going to be a lot of competition, but we just have to keep working week in and week out like we always do. I know Will Spaugh and this team do a great job at that, and I feel like we’re going to have a good car for South Boston.”
