BECHTELSVILLE, PA. – Jared Umbenhauer of Richland, Pa. worked his way through lapped traffic to catch and pass race leader Kyle Smith of Fleetwood, Pa. on lap seventeen, then held of a furious final four lap challenge from Justin Grim of Orefield, Pa. to score the win in the 30-lap T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment NASCAR Modified feature Saturday night at Grandview Speedway.
Also scoring a feature win Saturday night was young Bryce Bashore of Bethel, Pa. who, after starting tenth in the 25-lap T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Sportsman main event, was able to run the top groove of the speedway, working his way to the front, taking the lead on lap nineteen from Brett Gilmore of Kutztown, Pa., then racing on to his first career win at Grandview Speedway.
The winners both received bonus money (Modified $300, Sportsman $200) from T.P. Trailers and Truck Equipment of Limerick, Pa., sponsors of the two divisions at Grandview Speedway in a race program run under the NASCAR Local Racing Series Powered by O’Reilly Auto Parts banner.
An amazing field of 51 – T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Modifieds signed in to compete for the second event of the season, with Kyle Smith grabbing the lead at the drop of the green to start the 30-lap main event, with Justin Grim in second, followed by a three car battle between Duane Howard of Oley, Pa, Umbenhauer, and Ryan Graver of Lehighton, Pa.
Soon another top ten battle developed between Ryan Watt of Boyertown, Pa., Jim Housworth of Upper Black Eddy, Pa., Tim Buckwalter of Douglassville, Pa., as leader Smith would reach lapped traffic by lap thirteen, with the race continuing to run under a long stretch of green flag action.
The Grim, Howard, Umbenhauer battle for second was intense, with Umbenhauer grabbing third on lap ten, then second on lap fourteen, then quickly reeling in leader Smith in the lapped traffic.
Umbenhauer pressured Smith for several laps before making his move low off turn four to secure the lead to score lap seventeen, with Grim following through and grabbing second two laps later, and Watt, who was running in fourth, dropped out with mechanical problems.
By lap twenty, the action in the top ten was hot and heavy between Housworth, Howard, Buckwalter, Graver, and Eddie Strada of Lake Ariel, Pa., with Umbenhauer leading through lapped traffic and Grim right behind him.
The first caution of the race waved on lap twenty-two, when Craig Von Dohren of Oley, Pa. slowed, and fifth running Howard pitted with a flat tire, resetting the field.
Following the restart Strada, who started 14th, and Alex Yankowski of Covington Township, Pa. who started 13TH, would both make several position gains running the outside lane, with one final caution regrouping the field again on lap twenty-six.
The final four lap dash to the checkered was wild and exciting, as Umbenhauer led in the top lane, with Grim in the low lane applying serious pressure in a great race for the win, while Housworth and Strada would battle behind them for third, while Smith, Buckwalter, Yankowski and Ryan Grim of Laureys Station, Pa. would be locked into a struggle for the top ten spots.
On the final lap, Grim made one last effort getting along side of Umbenhauer through turn four, but Umbenhauer would win the race off the corner to the finish to win by a car length over Justin Grim, followed by Strada, Housworth, Smith, Buckwalter, Yankowski, Ryan Grim, Rick Laubach of Quakertown, Pa., and Opening Night winner Louden Reimert of Oley, Pa.
Qualifying heats for the 51 cars on hand were won by Jared Umbenhauer, Ryan Grim, Justin Grim, Duane Howard, and Ryan Graver, with Brandon Grosso of Hillsboro, N.J. and Jeff Strunk of Bechtelsville, Pa. winning the consolations.
The 25-lap T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Sportsman main event saw only one caution coming on lap three, setting up a wild, thrilling and competitive main event, with Brett Gilmore setting the early pace, followed closely by Teague Miller of Barto, Pa. and TJ Mayberry of Sellersville, Pa., as they all were tightly bunched together up front in a race for the win.
Behind the battle in the front was another race for position between Colton Perry of Topton, Pa., Mark Mohr of Gilbertsville, Pa., Decker Swinehart of Fleetwood, Pa. and tenth starting Bryce Bashore, who was slowly starting to work his way toward the front.
Bashore reached the top five by lap eight, fourth by lap nine, and caught the top three car battle on lap twelve, setting up a super four-car race for the win.
With Gilmore, Miller and Mayberry all working the bottom lane, Bashore, who had been running the high lane to reach fourth spot, just kept his foot to the floor and slowly lap by lap made progress, and started to pick off positions, taking third from Mayberrry on lap fourteen, second from Miller on lap fifteen, and then went to work on Gilmore for the lead.
After a great five lap battle for the lead, Bashore was able to power around the outside of Gilmore exiting turn four to score lap nineteen to become the new race leader, leaving Gilmore, Mayberry and Miller in a great battle for second spot.
The closing laps saw some lapped traffic for leader Bashore, but he ran the final laps successfully, to race home with his first career Grandview Speedway NASCAR Local Racing Series Powered by O’Reilly Auto Parts feature win, followed by TJ Mayberry who would gain two spots in the final laps to grab second, Gilmore, Miller, a late charging Colin Cox of Perkasie, Pa., Perry, Mohr, Swinehart, Brett Grim of Coplay, Pa., and Adrianna Delliponti of Norristown, Pa.
Qualifying heats for the 37 cars on hand were won by Teague Miller, Brett Gilmore, Shannon Slaughter of Lititz, Pa., and TJ Mayberry while the consolations were won by Ebby Ridge of Upper Black Eddy, Pa. and Jason Graber of Boyertown, Pa.
