BROOKFIELD, NY – In a third attempt,Brookfield Speedway and the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco finally completed the ‘Fast Cars & Freedom’ event on Sunday evening.
No one was happier than Tyler Peet.
The driver from Lake Ariel, Pa., wheeled to victory in the 25-lap STSS Sportsman headliner, leading from start to finish and surviving slower traffic in a green-to-checkered event, Round No. 2 of the Madsen Overhead Doors Inc. North Region.
For Peet, the victory was his fifth with the series and first at Brookfield, a tight quarter-mile oval located on the Madison County Fairgrounds. He earned $1,500.
“This place got a lot better since the last time we were here,” Peet said of the revived Brookfield venue. “It was pretty fun actually.”
Peet picked the pole following the Beyea Custom Headers redraw and immediately gapped the field in his Dakota Gajewski-fielded No. 9G.
He was not seriously challenged until the race’s final five laps, when a hard-charging Blaine Klinger arrived on the scene.
From nearly a straightaway back, Walton, N.Y.’s Klinger closed to Peet’s back bumper on the final lap but was unable to make a move.
“It was tough with traffic,” Peet said. “I didn’t really know where to go. I couldn’t really move them, and I couldn’t really go around them, so I just stayed there. I knew if I kept my left front down on the berm, I’d probably be alright.”
Klinger settled for runner-up pay following his surge in the race’s final laps.
Clayton DuMond of Rotterdam Junction, N.Y., completed the podium, fending off Joe Toth of Upper Makefield, Pa., and veteran Butchie Irwin of Climax, N.Y.
Klinger was the JLR Technologies Hot Lap Hero with a circuit of 16.645 seconds.
Matthew Richardson and Toth split the heat wins.
Brett Belden of Clinton, N.Y., completed his comeback with a win in the 20-lap Anderson Towing & Recovery Pro Stock event, pocketing $500. Belden, who underwent off-season surgery, scored his first victory since climbing back behind the wheel. Belden held off the relentless pursuits of Kenny Gates for the win.
The White’s Welding and Custom Cutting 20-lap Four Cylinder event was claimed by Deposit, N.Y., driver Collin Mills, who completed a pass of Kyle Simmons in the race’s second half. Mills earned a $150 bonus from White’s Welding & Custom Cutting as the Dual Cam (overall) winner. Hank Wedgren Jr. of Brookfield, N.Y., was the Single Cam winner, also collecting a $150 bonus.
Wayne Archer capped the program with a $500 payday in a wild 50-lap Enduro.
