Ryan Preece enters the Chase backed by a quiet, battle-tested confidence rather than the hesitation typical of a newcomer, ready to challenge the narrative surrounding the title contenders. He firmly rejects the prevailing analytical consensus that limits the championship race to the top six drivers.
“I don’t believe that. Not at all,” Preece asserts, viewing the ten-race stretch as an ultimate proving ground. “I think those guys are gonna race the hell out of each other, and if they have a couple of bad races, there’s no ‘win and you’re in’ to get to the next round.”
For Preece, the current standing doesn’t erase the work put in throughout the season. He argues that execution—not just point tallies—defines a championship-caliber team. He points to consistent performances at Richmond, New Hampshire, and Daytona as proof of the team’s evolution. “We didn’t luck into that win on Saturday,” he notes. “We ran up front. We executed. We did everything we needed to do as a Cup-winning caliber team. If we show that for the next 10 weeks at tracks that RFK is strong at, we can do it.”
The reality of the current 100-point deficit is not lost on him, but he sees it as a mathematical puzzle of execution rather than an insurmountable hurdle. He admits that bridging that gap requires perfection—qualifying well, securing stage points, and contending for stage wins. “If you’re not getting stage points, if you’re not contending for stage wins, you’re not gonna win the championship,” he acknowledges. “So I’m not in denial.”
At the heart of his confidence is a shift in team attitude, one shared with his crew chief, Derrick Finley. It’s an approach focused entirely on performing when the pressure is highest. “It’s all about peaking at the right time,” Preece says. “Anything is possible and I feel like Derrick’s attitude, my attitude, it wasn’t just Derrick and it wasn’t just me, it was the entire team.”
While some might see his position in the standings as a disadvantage, Preece thrives in the role of the spoiler. “I enjoy being the underdog, so bet against me,” he says. With a mindset that refuses to second-guess decisions or buckle under the pressure of the Chase grind, Preece is positioning his team to make noise in a field that perhaps hasn’t fully accounted for him yet.
