New Smyrna Releases Schedule For 55th World Series of Asphalt

Story & Photo by Kyle Souza

It might be December, but February is right around the corner. New Smyrna Speedway has released the schedule for the 55th annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, scheduled for February 5-13, 2021.

The week is headlined by two major divisions — the Tour Modifieds and Super Late Models — with Modifieds running five events and the SLM’s competing in seven of their own. The ARCA Menards Series East also returns on February 8 to open their 2021 season in what is a popular night for most race fans.

The Modified portion of the week begins on Monday, February 8, with a 50-lap feature, followed by a 35-lapper on Tuesday night. Wednesday will be the annual John Blewett Memorial 76-lapper, while Thursday is a normal 35-lap race and Friday is the finale, the Richie Evans Memorial 100. Early entries for the week include defending and multiple-time New Smyrna champion Matt Hirschman, four Catalano family drivers, Stafford Motor Speedway SK Modified regular Marcello Rufrano and New Hampshire champion Brian Robie. The list is only expected to grow with still two months until the green flag drops.

If any driver manages to win all five Modified races during the week, they will pocket $9,000 — with the most lucrative set to be the two memorial races. The Blewett race will pay $2,500 and the Evans Memorial will pay $3,000. The driver that earns the week-long championship will collect $1,100 in prize money.

The week starts on Thursday, February 4, with parking and practice. Friday opens the annual event with the David Rogers Super Late Models, Modifieds, Pro Late Models, Sportsman and Bomber A division.

A full schedule for the week can be found at the bottom of this story. Monday’s ARCA return will be coupled with the opener of the week for the Tour Modifieds, as the two divisions work together to wrap the night.

Additional special events include the Pro Late Model 100 championship race on Friday, February 12, and the Orange Blossom David Rogers Super Late Model 100 on the final night.

The defending Super Late Model champion of the week, Derek Griffith, is expected to attend. In the Pro Late Models, the Skinner family expects to field multiple cars, similar to what they have done in the past. The entry lists will be updated on the New Smyrna website as the event draws closer.

Drivers must pre-register online by January 16th if they want to earn 50 bonus points towards the championship battles. If registered before February 1st, the fee is just $175 — if after — it will be $250. Teams can register by clicking here.

Visconti Motorsports looks forward to their SOPHOMORE Season

This time last year John Visconti was taking a leap faith selling all of his Tour Modified equipment and moving into the NASCAR K & N East series.

Season two for the team starts this Sunday, as last year the NASCAR K & N Series will start the season with a Sunday night 175 lap race at the New Smyrna Speedway. What was an ominous start last with driver Branden McReynolds blew an engine during practice putting the team behind the 8 ball early.A 10th place finish in the 29 car field initial run while not a win proved the team would be a top runner.

The rest of the season the #74 Visconti Motorsports team took the lower budget team and showed the NASCAR K & N competitors they we there to win.

On a part time basis the #74 with Brandon McReynolds at the wheel they averaged the 2nd highest average finish of any top 15 team. Brandon only ran have the schedule and still finished 11th in points only being in the wrong place at South Boston at the wrong time and a bad tire at New Smyrna. kept them out of the top 10.

The high point of the season came at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in September where Brandon led 78 laps to take the win in the Apple Barrel 125 in dominating fashion.

I spoke to team owner John Visconti about the 2019 season and year two for the team.

“We are heading into the season with the same paint scheme but a slightly re-branded car”. This year instead of the IGA logo it now will say “The Reichert Group”. Charles Reichert has been a Visconti supporter for years this year his name will be placed prominently on the hood.

We are also very excited to start the 2019 NASCAR K & N Pro East season. Being this is our second season we now have a notebook for all the tracks we’ve been too. Last year as a rookie team we had a blank notebook.”

The only track we visited twice last year was New Hampshire and we won the second time there. We are very optimistic about 2019 and the start of the season at New Smyrna Speedway.

After Fridays practice the #74 sits atop the scoreboard with a fast lap of 18.231 over Hallie Deegan, rookie Max Mclaughlin and Ty Gibbs which bodes well for a great run on Sunday night.

The New Smyrna 175 Sunday February 10th at New Smyrna Speedway, qualifying at 5:30, an autograph session at 6:30 with the 175 lap feature going green at 7:40.

Modified Teams Get ready to Roar at New Smyrna Speedway

As has been the tradition for decades race teams from across America and Canada leave the cold weather and make the long trip to Sunny Florida for the  World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing . The big track in Daytona is only a few miles away but many who venture for the 9 nights of racing will only drive by as their focus is on the 1/2 mile oval at the New Smyrna Speedway.

Several Modified teams head down early and are already camped out at the track ready for action. The winter has been long cold and harsh in some parts of the country stoking the drivers need to race. . The Tour Modified week starts at New Smyrna with practice on Thursday the 7th.  Then on to Bronson Speedway for the Kick off to Speedways on Saturday the 9th. The 50 lap Tour Type Modified event has grown a little bit each year and with 29 or more cars headed to New Smyrna the Bronson field should grow again this year. More and more sponsors have come on board to support the annual event. This year there will be bonus money, tires and fuel for the competitors in addition to the prize money.

Early pre-registration for The World Series of Stock Car Racing was strong this year in all divisions.  The Tour Modified will bring a strong field of at least 29 cars with the Super Late Models and Pro Late Models not far behind.

For years Richie Evans, Charlie Jarzombek, Greg Sacks, Reggie Ruggerio, Jimmy Spencer and many other top drivers made the trip south to start their season. Many of today’s top Tour Modified drivers look to add their names to the list of winners that make this such a prestigious week of racing attracting thousands of fans from all over the country.

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup rookie of the year contender Ryan Preece will be there for the first 3 nights of competition in the #6 Ed Partridge owned machine. Ryan will make a very would love to take a checker or two.

Several NASCAR WMT teams will be there including Patrick Emerling, multi time Champion Doug Coby, Timmy Solomito, using the 5 nights to get the car ready for the 2019 NASCAR WMT season, Jimmy Blewett driving a Gershow Motorsports entry and Dave Sapienza.

The ROC will be well represented with Chuck Hossfeld, Matt Hirschman, Andy Jankowiak, Timmy Catalano, Tommy Catalano and Amy Catalano making the long tow from Pa. and upstate New York.

While not to be left out several teams from New England will be part of the 2019 field.  MRS racers Mike Willis, Anthony Nocella and Jeffery Gallop will leave the cold and snow to get their season Started.

With those competitors young Dillon Steuer will make his first Speedweeks in the familiar 11X. Dillon at a young age has already have several wins on pavement and dirt under his belt including the Islip 300 at Riverhead Raceway plus many more drivers. The full entry list is below.
