LANCASTER, N.Y. (May 13, 2023) – 2021 track champion Shawn Nye from Lancaster, NY won the Monroe Extinguisher Sportsman on Saturday afternoon at Lancaster Motorplex. Jake Christman made the trip from Pennsylvania worth it as he won the Ferrario Auto Team New York Super Stock Series main event. Tim Welshans from West Falls, NY won the Street Stock main event. John Byrd from Cheektowaga, NY won the 4 Cylinder feature.
Tony Carbone and Tom MacLeod were on the front row for the Monroe Extinguisher Sportsman with Carbone showing the way ahead of MacLeod, Andy Nye, Shawn Nye, and John Barber. Shawn Nye would take over second and then would go after Carbone for the lead. Carbone, Nye, MacLeod, and Jake Vernon would pull away from the field following a lap four restart. Carbone and Nye would pull away from MacLeod, Vernon, and Alan Bookmiller as the race reached the halfway mark. The caution would fly as Rich Littlefield and John Barber came together on the front straightaway. Shawn Nye would take the lead away from Carbone on lap 15 after a two-lap battle for the top spot. The field would fan out into single-file racing, with Nye edging away from Carbone. The lead duo would pull away from MacLeod, Vernon, and Andy Nye. Shawn Nye would pull away to earn his first win of the season.
Matt Druar and Jake Christman were on the front row for the New York Super Stocks (NYSS) 50-lap event, with Druar showing the way. Druar and Christman pulled away from Josh Hunter, Jacob Gustafson, and Tommy Krawczyk. While running in third, Josh Hunter spun in turn four to bring out the caution on lap eight. On the restart, Jacob Gustafson would challenge Christman and would take over the runner-up position on lap 11, as Druar started to pull away in the lead. Christman would take over the lead on lap 18, with Tommy Krawczyk taking over second place. Bill Frisbee spun in turn four to bring out the caution on lap 33. Under the restart green, Christman and Krawczyk would pull away from the balance of the field. Krawczyk would hit the wall coming off turn four to bring out the caution on lap 45, ending his strong run. Jacob Gustafson would challenge Christman for the lead late in the event, but Christman was able to hang on and score the win. Results from the NYSS are unofficial pending a technical review.
Brothers Tim and Nick Welshans brought the Street Stocks to the green flag with Tim Welshans in the lead ahead of Nik, Teej Cochrane, Jacob Gustafson, and Dan Dressel. Gustafson would make his move early to take over second from Nik Welshans and would go after race leader Tim Welshans. The lead trio of Welshans, Gustafson, and Welshans would pull away from Cochrane, with Chris Powers battling with Dustin Novoa and David Brunka for the fifth position. Tim Welshans and Jacob Gustafson would pull away from the field, but a spinning Mike Piccirilli would set up a green-white-checkered finish.
Mason Offhaus and Andy Danielwicz were on the front row for the 4 Cylinder feature, with Mason Offhaus showing the way. Danielwicz was being pressured by Russ Bulger Jr and John Byrd in the battle for second place. Bulger Jr would take the runner up spot away on lap nine and then would go after Offhaus for the lead. Wyatt Hannon spun in turn one to bring out the caution on lap 10. The ensuing restart would see Bulger and Offhaus make contact with both spinning, and collecting Josh Schosek, and Danielwicz. On the restart, John Byrd would inherit the lead ahead of Russ Bulger Sr and Chris Deyoe. Byrd would pull away to score his first win of the season.
Racing action continues at Lancaster next Saturday, May 20 for the first Saturday Night Short Track Racing night of the season. The Late Models will make their second visit of the season plus the Monroe Extinguisher Sportsman, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, and the Mighty TQ Midgets will be on the card. Also, on tap will be the King Wolf Productions Big Wheels! Kids aged 3-12 can sign up at the picnic tables in the main concourse when gates open and race during intermission. Pit gates will open at 2:30pm, grandstands open at 4:00pm, and racing will begin at 6:30pm.
