SAINT-MARCEL-DE-RICHELIEU, QUEBEC – One wild night.
The ‘Short Track Spectaculaire’ of Le RPM Speedway served as the battleground for Night No. 2 of the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco ‘Lumberjack Swing’ on Tuesday night.
Following a 60-lap STSS Modified feature full of twists and turns, Stewart Friesen stood in Bicknell Racing Products Victory Lane celebrating a $10,000 victory.
The Sprakers, N.Y., driver led the race’s final 28 laps on the lightning-fast quarter-mile oval to register his 56th career STSS Modified victory and first since March at N.J.’s Bridgeport Motorsports Park.
The event served as Round No. 6 of the STSS Modified HYTORC of New York North Region.
“I love it,” Friesen said of the racy RPM oval. “That’s fun! Bullring racing up on the wall!”
Friesen was engaged in a scintillating battle through lapped traffic with Mat Williamson when the race’s complexion changed dramatically on the 33rd lap.
Williamson’s Behrent’s Performance Warehouse No. 3 entered turn three on the cushion, bounced momentarily and began a series of barrel rolls sending the car over the wall into the pit area. Williamson, thankfully, walked away uninjured.
Friesen, who had traded the top spot with ‘Money Mat’ during the race’s first half, inherited the lead after starting sixth following the Beyea Custom Headers Redraw.
“Right place at the right time,” Friesen said of Williamson’s effort. “I think we were a little too free at the end – the track changed a lot over 60 laps.”
Friesen paced the remainder of the distance but didn’t simply drive away.
Ontario’s Chris Raabe – who started eighth – kept Friesen within striking distance, closing the advantage during the final 10 laps. Raabe ultimately settled for a second consecutive $5,000 runner-up finish, bringing his earnings to $10,000 for the two days of racing in Quebec.
After pitting following an opening lap tangle, Napierville, Quebec’s Felix Roy – who started 20th – barnstormed through the field to complete the podium.
Seventh-starter Anthony Perrego of Walden, N.Y., finished fourth in the Bob Hentschel-owned No. 4, his second straight ‘Lumberjack Swing’ top-five effort. Michael Parent of Granby, Quebec drove from 14th to finish fifth.
Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were pole starter Alex Payne of Canandaigua, N.Y.; Mathieu Desjardins of Yamaska, Quebec; William Racine of Saint-Paul-D’Abbotsford, Quebec; 22nd-starter Samuel Charland of Bon-Conseil, Quebec; and Donovan Lussier of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, who started 24th.
The top-10 finish for Lussier culminated a roller coaster night that began with the ATL Fuel Cells Hot Lap Hero Award before flipping on the opening lap of his heat race.
STSS Modified HYTORC of New York championship contenders Matt Sheppard and Alex Yankowski both failed to finish the event when Yankowski’s car slowed at the exit of turn two, collecting Sheppard.
Lussier’s ATL Racing Fuels Hot Lap Hero time was 13.498 seconds.
Heat winners were Raabe, Alan Therrien and Kevin Hamel.
Yamaska, Quebec’s Jacob Nadeau was the 30-lap STSS Sportsman victor, earning $1,500. Nadeau became the 68th different winner in series history following the 30-lap event, Round No. 6 of the STSS Sportsman Madsen Overhead Doors Inc. North Region.
Nadeau led the final 28 laps of the event, pulling to a lead of more than a straightaway.
STSS Sportsman North Region point leader Tyler Peet – who picked ’10’ in the Beyea Custom Headers Redraw – was the show in the event’s late stages. The Lake Ariel, Pa., driver weaved through traffic to finish second following a Monday victory at Autodrome Granby.
Peet extended his series championship lead following the STSS Sportsman debut in Quebec.
Sixth-starter Samuel Lajoie of Upton, Quebec completed the podium, followed by Karl Letendre of Saint-Aime-de-Massueville, Quebec and Raphael Gougeon of Saint-Majorique, Quebec.
Jeff Beaumier was the JLR Technologies Hot Lap Hero, circling the oval at 13.901.
Heat winners were Nadeau, Lea-Jeanne Lauziere and Kaven Poliquin.
The STSS returns to action Thurs.-Sat. Sept. 17-19 with the Fonda 200 Weekend presented by Mirabito Energy Products at N.Y.’s Fonda Speedway. Three days of racing are headlined by the 200-lap, 100-mile ‘Fonda 200’ featuring a total purse structure of more than $106,000.
