Riverhead, NY July 28th.

By Bob Finan

There will be plenty of excitement and mayhem to break up the work week at Riverhead Raceway Wednesday August 2nd when a School Bus Demolition Derby closes out a night of stock car racing excitement. The Street Stocks and Bock Auto INEX Bandoleros will highlight the five divisions un action during the work week special, the first of two Wednesday shows in August.

The Street Stocks race into action and conclude a busy stretch of racing that began in late July. The 2023 title fight has started to come into focus with Brian McCormack of Holbrook and defending champion Dave Antos of Lindenhurst atop the rankings. However, Jarrod Hayes of Calverton went on a two-race win streak lately and he could very well wind up in victory lane Wednesday.

The stars of tomorrow will shine in two Bock Auto INEX Bandolero features. Championship leader Reid Halpin of Wading River, a two-time winner this season will lead the Bandits into their 15-lap feature, while Outlaws point leader Ben Morabito of Miller Place will do likewise for their 15-lap main event. Morabito was the 2022 Bandits champion before moving to the Outlaws this year.

Providing some wild and unpredictable wall-to-wall racing action Wednesday will be out three Enduro divisions. Tested tough veteran Bobby “The Pease Man” Pease of Medford will lead the Truck Enduro competitors into action, while Woot Lawrence of Southampton holds the 8-Cylinder Enduro championship leading heading into Wednesday. Off a wild event in July, the 4/6-Cylinder Gut & Go division s again in action. Frank Raynor of North Sea and Zach Tyler of Cutchogue are vying for the title. The story however in the July race was winner John Palmeri of Lindenhurst, who despite spinning a half dozen times while leading, he still won the race!

Once all the racing is in the books it will be time for the thunderous sounds and unbelievable optics of a full-size School Bus Demolition Derby. Spectator will be on their feet as these 13-ton machines dance around the tight confines of Riverhead Raceway. When the buses collide, it is with a brute force that can only do it justice by being there live and in person.

Race teams should note for the Wednesday August 2nd special pit gates will open at 5:00 pm, practice starts at 5:45 pm.

Spectator gates open at 6:00 pm, qualifying for the Street Stocks will commence at 7:00 pm. Adults $30, kids 6-12 $20, 5 & under free.
