Riverhead, NY July 6th

By Bob Finan

With a dismal forecast of severe afternoon thunderstorms on an already hot and humid day, complete with a heat advisory from the National Weather Service, Riverhead Raceway officials decided to cancel racing for Saturday evening July 6th. The track returns to action next Saturday July 13th featuring the first School Bus Demolition Derby of 2024, as well as a JuiceBox Racers event.

“Accu-weather forecast models already had a very hot and humid day with heat advisories in place” track GM John Ellwood noted in making the cancellation announcement, “it was already going to be an oppressive day as it stood, throw in the threat of severe storms, we thought it best just to call it a day before any of our loyal teams made the haul out here”. Saturday night’s program was highlighted by the annual Cecil Palm Tree 160, a tribute to the late Eddie Partridge. “We are going to look at our options, the schedule is pretty jammed, but we will present a Cecil Palm Tree event in perhaps a modified version” Ellwood furthered. The NASCAR Modifieds now start their mid-season summer break and are off until Saturday night July 27th.

Looking ahead to this Saturday July 13th the popular School Bus Demolition Derby will take center stage for the family fun night show. The death-defying Figure Eight stock cars are back in action with their near misses at the crossover, they are joined by the Super Pro Trucks, Street Stocks, Bock Auto INEX Bandoleros and a 4.6.-Cylinder Gut & Go Enduro. The Super Pro Trucks and Street Stocks will contest 30-lap feature events as part of their respective 2024 Miller Lite Triple Crown Series.

Once all the stock car racing is in the books, the 13-ton School Buses will the track, led by most recent winner of the event in 2023, “Frank the Tank” Dumicich Jr. of East Quogue. If you have never witnessed a School Bus Demolition Derby, it’s highly recommended you do. The sights and sounds these giant machines create while crashing into one another can only be experienced to its fullest in person.

Opening ceremonies are set for 6:30 pm Saturday, qualifying will proceed opening ceremonies. Adults $30, kids 6-12 $15, 5 & under are free.
