WALL, NJ ~ Blake Barney survived a handful of early race restarts along with challenges from a multi-time champion to race to his first win of the season in the 40-lap main event for Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. It was the Howell resident’s seventh career victory.

Barney rocketed his red No. 14 to the lead at the outset and survived two early race restarts caused by turn four multi-car pile ups. Jake Nelke of Manahawkin was Barney’s first challenger before Howell’s Andrew Krause advanced to second and went after the leader.

From that point on Krause shadowed Barney while Mayetta’s Tyler Truex and Milltown’s Derek Hopkinson joined the battle. In fact, Truex slipped into second for a few circuits before sliding back to third. At the checker it was Barney, Krause, Truex, Hopkinson and Nelke the top five.

“That was a tough race on a very hot night,” Barney said. “You know, I am just so happy driving this No. 14 and racing with my father and grandfather. It is really cool. So many famous drivers have wheeled a family No. 14 and I am proud to be one of them.”

Billy Both of Rahway won his first 25-lap Sportsman feature of the year taking the lead early and never looking back. Neil Rutt III was Both’s first challenger before Howell’s Kevin Davison advanced to second and taunted Both to the finish. Zach Lenardo, Robert Sutphin and Rutt completed the top five.

Johnny Carpenter of Howell fought off Jared Okerson and then Shanon Mongeau to win the 25 lapper for the Factory Stock cars. Kevin Flores and Rob Anderton were fourth and fifth behind Carpenter, Mongeau and Okerson.

Taking the lead after Mike Lavery spun from the top spot with just a few laps remaining, Ian Ashford of Howell won his second straight 25-lapper for the Fast 4 division. TJ Graves, Jerry Stanzione, Eric Mancini and Corey Carr were second through fifth.

Ray Minieri of Miller Place, NY won his second straight Limited Late Model 25 lap race after taking the lead from runner-up Brian Doyle near the halfway point. Pat Brown, Phil Bogdan and Greg Gastelu wrapped up the top five.

Ryan Tidman raced into the lead past Tyler Ferris with five laps remaining in the non-stop 25 lap Doug Craig Memorial for the TQ Midgets. Tidman and Ferris were followed by Blake Barney, Joe Payne and Steve Craig in the top five.

Wall Stadium will return to action on Saturday night, July 19. The Modifieds, Sportsman, Factory Stocks, Fast 4s and Legend cars will all be in action during this 75th anniversary of the speedway. The Modfieds will compete in a 75 lap race. Qualifying is at 5:00 p.m. with main events starting at 7:00 p.m.
