CLAREMONT – Modified racing star Brian Robie, just two weeks shy of wrapping up another championship in Claremont Motorsports Park’s weekly Asetex Tire & Auto 604 Modified division, stuck yet another feather in his cap Sunday at the storied Thrasher Road speedplant.
The Sunapee speedster dominated the MDP Motorsports Productions presents 75-lap Modified Racing Series main event to earn the top prize in the Labor Day Weekend classic.
Other winners Sunday included Cody Schoolcraft, who unofficially moved back to the top of the Super Street points parade with the holiday weekend win, Mini Stock ace Kyle Templeton, who stayed undefeated on the summer, and former CMP Pure Stock champion Chris Chambers, who finished inches behind on the asphalt but far ahead in the tech line.
Sammy Rameau and Matt Kimball led the 18-car blockbuster MRS Modified field to the green Sunday, with Rameau pouncing quickly on the opening lead. Firing from row two, Brian Robie had his sights set on two goals; taking top honors over the big field on his home track, and overtaking row-three starter Brett Meservey at the top of the MRS points parade.
Robie charged past Kimball for second on lap 12 and six go-rounds later, on a restart, out dragged Rameau from the top groove to take the lead and then hold strong the rest of the way to score the big win.
Rameau never gave up his pursuit of the top prize, keeping the leader in his reach until a lap-65 restart brought on by Jeremy Zullo’s grinding meeting with the turn four wall gave him one last shot at the top spot. Robie, though, was up to the challenge, outgunning the Bay State hot shoe on the restart and soaring off to victory.
With Rameau strong in second, Kimball finished his solid Sunday run third, just ahead of Meservey. Jacob Perry was fifth on the night, and Joey Jarvis completed his march from 18th on the starting grid to come home sixth.
Cody Schoolcraft was quick to the front in the nightcap R.E. Hinkley Fuels Super Street 50-lapper, taking the lead from Travis Sykes before lap two went into the books and then holding the top spot the rest of the way. Schoolcraft, who had given up the top spot on the championship points tally a week before, was on a mission.
Robert Hagar and Robbie Streeter raced fast and furiously for the second spot and, on lap 24, top points man Brandon Gray rocketed up to third. The Thetford, VT star overtook team mate and car owner Robbie Streeter for second, and the race was on.
Shooting for the top spot as the leaders soared through turn four on lap 39, the track suddenly got too narrow, with Gray ricocheting off the concrete wall and ducking pitside before returning to finish fourth on the night.
Joe Tetreault, strong and patient all race, blasted up to take second, finishing the 50-lapper at Schoolcraft’s bumper in the runner-up slot. Streeter’s strong night’s work brought him home third. Unofficially, Schoolcraft’s feature win, coupled with an earlier heat race second, moved him back to the top spot in the points chase, two markers ahead of Gray entering next Friday’s event.
Sean Lantas led the first nine laps of the RaceDay TV Mini Stock main event, then giving way to Rocketman Kyle Templeton, who then sailed off to stay undefeated on the season. Lantas was second under the checkers, and Pat Houle came home third.
Dick LaMotte, who had shredded the field in an earlier heat race and was poised to take a shot at ending Templeton’s unbeaten streak, exited the feature on lap seven, while Pure Stock star Andrea St. Amour, making her debut in the Minis Sunday, lost a shoe while running fourth on lap 23.
Carter Conroy and Chris Chambers raced under a blanket from green to checkers on the Lavalley Building Supply Pure Stock main event. Behind them, the five-pack of Handt, Grenier, Kenny, Zellman and Hull raced as one in the battle for third.
When post-race tech inspections had been completed, Chambers was declared the winner, and Green Mountain State star Kyle Kenny was second. Zellman was moved up to third, with Colton Hull’s forth, and Nathan Waterman rounding out th top five.
In a battle of the Beamers, Josh Carrera wheeled his BMW into Country Fuels Victory Lane just ahead of Elijah Clogston in the night’s one-on-one Spectator Drag finale.
Claremont Motorsports Park returns to action next Friday, September 5, with a full card of NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Racing Series action,. Post time is 7 p.m. each Friday at CMP.
