WALL, NJ ~ In front of one of the largest grandstand crowds in memory, Blake Barney of Howell raced to victory in the “Spring Fling 50” opening night NASCAR Modified race at Wall Stadium. It was the first event under the promotional team of Pete Malleto and Fred Archer and the first since the NASCAR Local Racing Series presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts returned to the third mile high banked paved oval.
Barney rocketed his famous red No. 14 to the front at the drop of the green flag, Howell’s Jimmy Blewett soon advanced to second to challenge before Brick’s Eddie McCarthy made a daring inside lane pass to take over second and go after the leader. The top two stayed the same through the half way mark as Blewett, Jackson’s Steven Reed and Wall’s Tyler Ferris ran in a tight top five.
Cautions for minor incidents tightened the battle as the race wore on as Blewett and Reed slipped into second and third with McCarthy nailing down fourth. Ferris was fifth in the 22 car field.
“I’m realy happy with the American Racer tires we switched to this year,” Barney said. “I also have to thank my grandfather and father for the rocket tonight and everyone who worked so hard to make this place beautiful!”
Billy Both of Rahway raced to victory in the companion NASCAR Sportsman 25 lap race. Young Paulie Hartwig III applied heavy pressure before settling for second. Christian LaCicero, Zack Lenardo and Steve Whitt were second tbhrough fifth.
Twenty seven Factory Stock cars took the green flag for the night’s 25 lapper with Howell’s Johnny Carpenter nailing down the opening night win over the returning Chris Lane who offered pressure in the closing laps. Third through fifth went to Rob Anderton, Kevin Flores and Jared Okerson.
After an early race battle with two competitors, Hazlet’s Billy Pross raced to the 4 Cylinder 25 lap feature race win. Doug Ashford, Eric Mancini, Frank DeAngeles and Kevin Maher were second through fifth
In just his fifth start Lars Wilson took the lead on lap three and raced on to victory over Justin Emmons, Thomas Schwarz, Mark Tischler and Jack Gerzabek in the Legend Cars 25 lapper. Geoffrey Sutton was the top runner in the ATQMRA TQ Midget feature while Kyle Taraska, Joey Payne, Blake Barney and Tyler Ferris were the open cockpit top five.
Wall Stadium will return to action this Saturday night, May 9. The Modified cars will compete in a 40 lap main event. Sportsman cars, Factory Stocks and Legend Cars will also be in action. Qualifying is at 5:00 p.m. with main events starting at 7:00 p.m.
