The Biggest Weekend in Shangri-La II Speedway History
The Greatest Tradition in Modified Racing Returns to New York
OWEGO, N.Y. (October 14, 2026) – Race of Champions and Shangri-La II Speedway management have jointly decided to move the highly anticipated 76th Annual Race of Champions Weekend back one week to Friday, October 23; Saturday, October 24; and Sunday, October 25, 2026, due to adverse conditions expected to impact the originally scheduled three-day event.
The decision was made after careful consideration of the circumstances facing the event, with the goal of providing competitors, fans, employees and everyone involved the opportunity to experience the complete Race of Champions Weekend as planned.
All previously announced daily schedules and start times will remain unchanged.
“This is not a move we want to make, but one we feel is best from a business standpoint,” stated Joe Skotnicki, Race of Champions. “We are in the business of putting on racing events, but we also have to make business decisions. Sometimes those decisions are difficult, and people may or may not agree with them. Considering the conditions we are facing, we believe this is the best decision for everyone involved. Trying to package a three-day event into one day is simply not an option, nor would it be fair to our competitors, fans or employees. We have worked too hard to put this event together to compromise what it is intended to be. Therefore, we felt it was best to restack the deck, move the event one week and give everyone the opportunity to enjoy the entire weekend.”
The 76th Annual Al Gerber Trophy Race of Champions 125 will now take place on Sunday, October 25, at Shangri-La II Speedway, the Super Speedway of the Southern Tier, near Owego, N.Y.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 — CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY
Championship Saturday will feature the Race of Champions Sportsman Modified Series in a 50-lap championship event that will determine the 2026 Series champion.
The Sportsman Modifieds will be joined by the Race of Champions FOAR SCORE Four Cylinder Dash Series and the inaugural Hobby Stock / Street Stock Challenge.
The unique Hobby Stock / Street Stock Challenge will allow competitors from both divisions to participate under their respective rules packages, creating an opportunity to see how the two divisions stack up against one another. Practice begins at 11:00 a.m., with racing scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25 — 76TH ANNUAL AL GERBER TROPHY RACE OF CHAMPIONS 125
The centerpiece of the weekend will be the 76th Annual Al Gerber Trophy Race of Champions 125, featuring the Race of Champions Modified Series competing for $10,000 to win and the opportunity to add another name to the prestigious Al Gerber Memorial Trophy.
The 125-lap championship event continues one of the longest-running traditions in North American motorsports, second only to the Indianapolis 500.
Practice begins at 11:00 a.m., with qualifying scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and feature racing to follow.
The traditional Race of Champions format will remain in place, including three over-the-wall crew members and one permitted tire change during the 125-lap event. Strategy, preparation and execution will once again play a major role in determining the winner.
The event marks the return of the Race of Champions to New York after recent editions were contested in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
In addition to the prestige of winning one of Modified racing’s most celebrated events, the race will serve as the 2026 Race of Champions Modified Series championship finale, with the Series champion crowned at the conclusion of the event.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23 — OPEN PRACTICE
The weekend will begin with open practice on Friday, October 23, allowing competitors to prepare for the championship events ahead.
The previously announced Friday schedule and start times remain unchanged.
