The Ed Watkins Marine Weekend of Speed concluded Sunday evening at Mountain Creek Speedway with five divisions of outlaw karts taking to the one-sixth mile, D-shaped clay oval. Searing hot temperatures didn’t slow the competitors down as there was no threat of rain from Mother Nature.
Cameron Hyler dominated the Cadet A-main when he led wire-to-wire for his first win of the 2021 season. TJ Pursley came home in second with Tucker Nash third. Jaxon Walawender and Carson Hammill were fourth and fifth. Chase DeMarco looked to be headed to his third win of the season until a late race caution stacked the field back together. Coming from a ninth place starting spot, newcomer, Liam Kane restarted third. Kane worked past Beckham Malone for second then took the lead from DeMarco with three laps remaining to take his first win of 2021. Demarco would finish a solid second with Malone, third.
Lou Mattesen stretched the points lead even further leading flag to flag in the Yamaha 450 Stock division. His closest competitor, Tony Rhinehart kept Mattesen within his sights but not enough to pressure for a win. Rhinehart would hang on for second with Nick Hatton completing the top three. Knoxville Nationals Dirt Kart winner, Coen McDaniel kept the winning momentum going as he started from the pole and never looked back in the Intermediate A-main. McDaniel was chased to the finish by Beckham Malone making his Intermediate debut.
Ed Watkins from Ed Watkins Marine had a lot to smile about in a 24hour period. Besides serving as the race sponsor, Watkins weekend job is the gas-man for the #23Xi Racing of Bubba Wallace in the NASCAR Cup Series. Their team finished second at Daytona Saturday night and Watkin’s eleven year old son, Rhylen set quick time in Box Stocks and won his heat. Come feature time, young Watkins would bring the Box Stock field to the green but engine troubles relegated the team to an eighth place finish. Gavin Marlin dominanted and won his very first Box Stock A-main with Karter Beattie a close second with Cole Thomas, third.
Caden Kvapil has been hot this year on both dirt and pavement and found a free weekend to stop Colt Currie’s win streak at three in a row. Kvapil took down with win with an almost three second advantage over point leader, Currie. Knoxville Nationals Dirt Kart winner, Coen McDaniel was third. The next race on the schedule for outlaw karts at Mountain Creek Speedway will be September 12th. Gates open at 1pm with practice starting at 3pm. The track will also be available for testing and practice days throughout the year. Those wishing to reserve rental or testing days can contact Jason Queen at (828)413-6890 for details and availability.
