Riverhead, NY May 7th.
By Bob Finan
A approaching coastal storm arriving on Long Island Friday and spending the Mother’s Day weekend washed out the 2022 NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series lid lifter set for Saturday evening May at Riverhead Raceway. While that is the bad news, the good news is the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Northeast opening event, the Miller Lite 200 takes center stage at Riverhead May 14th. The opening night seven division slate of racing set for May 7th will move to May 21st with the Eddie Partridge Vintage All Stars also in action.
Defending WMT champion Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, an eight time winner at his home track with the WMT will lead the troops into action in their first Northeast race of 2022. The Miller Lite 200 starts a string of three races in three weeks for the WMT with the Granite State Derby on May 21st at Lee USA Speedway and the Jennerstown Salute 150 in Jennerstown, Pa following on May 28th.
Riverhead native Eric Goodale and Tommy Catalano of Ontario, NY are knotted at the early season championship standings with Tyler Rypkema of Owego, NY just one marker out of the lead. Drivers who complete the current top ten rankings, Jon McKennedy of Chelmsford, Ma, Ron Silk of Nowarlk, Ct., Jimmy Blewett of Howell, NJ, Craig Lutz of Miller Place, Austin Beers of Northampton, Pa, Justin Bonsignore and his Holtsville neighbor JB Fortin will all take a shot at winning the Miller Lite 200 Saturday.
The Crate Modifieds, INEX Legend Race Cars, Street Stocks and Mini Stocks will compliment the May 14th program. WMT final practice will start at 3:00 pm and run until 4:00 pm, spectator gates open at 3 as well. WMT qualifying is set for 6:00 pm after the track divisions with the Miller Lite 200 set for approx. 8:00 pm. The event will be available in it’s entirety on the Flo Racing platform.
