The work week was broken up for Long Island race fans with a special midweek program at Riverhead Raceway Wednesday evening with eight feature event presented including a School Bus Demolition Derby. Owen Grennan of Glen Cove topped the 40-lap Eagle Auto Mall Crate Modified event for his third win of 2022, while Sean Glennon of Northport scored his third Super Pro Truck win of the season in a 30-lap tilt. Both races were the second for each class in the Miller Lite Triple Crown Series and were originally schedule for July 16th before being rained out.
Qualifying for the Crate Modifieds found Owen Grennan quickest with a lap of 12.418 while Sean Glennon was second fastest with a lap at 12.483. Right from the start it was clear the three main players for the win would be Grennan, Glennon and Max Handley who qualified third. Grennan broke to the lead with Handley and Glennon battling for second over the first segment of the race. As the contest moved along the side by side battle for second allowed Grennan to build a small, but yet comfortable lead over Glennon, who eventually moved to second and Handley who sat third. Not even a pair of double file restarts after the halfway mark could rattle Owen Grennan in the Dillner Precast Chevy as Owen would regain his advantage in a lap or two after restarts. At the finish Owen Grennan padded his all time leading win total in the class to 13 with the victory. Sean Glennon brought his Deer Run Industries Chevy home for runner-up money while Max Handley of Medford was third in the Hydro Action Chevy.
The 15-lap Figure Eight main event feature a last lap, door banging pass for the win with Joe Warren Jr. of Ridge giving new car owner Sean Hansen his first ever career win. For Warren it was his first win of ’22, fourth overall. Early on 2021 Blunderbust champion Cody Triola set the pace with Allan Pedersen in tow. While starting the third lap Triola spun in turn two off the bumper of Pedersen drawing a caution after Triola’s car hit the oncoming Ken Hyde Jr. Pedersen was sent to the rear for contact. When the race resumed Vinny Delaney was the new race leader with Joe Warren Jr. in tow. The sub plot to the story is Delaney drives for Warren’s former car owners added some spice to what was to come. As the laps waned down to a precious few Warren was all over Delaney for the race lead and on the final lap entering the right hand turn Delaney left the door open and Warren pounced. Warren filled the gap alongside Delaney who tried to throw the block. In a body slamming, photo finish that saw both cars spinning wildly across the line Joe Warren Jr. was the winner in the Island Thrift Chevy. Vinny Delaney of Islip Terrace was second in the South Bay Sayville Auto Repair Cadillac with defending champion Scott Pedersen of Shirley third in the Land, Air & Water Environmental Chevy.
Sean Glennon scored the clean sweep of the 30-lap Super Pro Truck feature, setting fast time 13.174 and leading from start to finish. Easy day at the office, right? Not so fast. Defending champion Jack Handley Jr. was second quick in qualifying with a lap of 13.221 and over the entire distance of the race glued himself to Glennon’s rear bumper. Clearly Glennon in his R&R Brothers Electric Chevy and Handley in the River Walk Bar & Grill entry were the class of the field breaking away during green flag runs for the rest of the field. At times Handley riding the rear tailgate of the leader let Glennon know he was there with a soft nudge or two. In the end however Sean Glennon would not yield and drove off to his 7th career win in the class while Jack Handley Jr. of Medford was left settling for second. Sophomore driver Matt Triola of Bay Shore brought the Cesspool Pros Chevy home third.
Gerard Lawrence of Miller Place topped a non-stop 20-lap Street Stock feature event for his first win of the year, fourth of his career. James DiPietro was impressive early on leading the first half of the race fending off challenges from Alyssa Paprocky, Jay Henschel as well Lawrence over the first 10 circuits. Shortly after making his way to second Lawrence in the EP Milling & Sweeping Chevy made his bid for the lead entering the third, passing DiPietro for the lead as the field baegan the 11th lap. Jay Henschel also got by DiPietro and over the final half of the race hounded Lawrence for the lead while Greg Harris watched it all from third. Lawrence however would not rattle and drove off to the popular win in the rapidly paced event. In the closing laps Greg Harris of Riverhead worked his SGS Stone Works Chevy to second where he’d finish with Jay Henschel of Levittown third in the Drexler Construction Chevy.
Less that 24 hours after clinching the Bandolero Bandit championship at the Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway, defending champion Darren Krants Jr. of Huntington remains undefeated at Riverhead winning for the third time in as many races. Before anyone could blink an eye Krantz drove his Angela’s House entry from the 11th starting spot to the race lead before the pack exited turn two on the first lap! Ben Morabito made his way to second and was trying to find a way by Krantz but DJ was having none of it and drove to his 8th career win. Ban Morabito of Miller Place was second in the Benimax Trucking machine, while Rodney Dowless of Dix Hills was third in his sponsor wanted racer.
Tucker Bock of East Hampton scored his third career win when he topped the 15-lap Bandolero Outlaw main event. Starting from the 6th spot Bock wasted no time breaking to the lead on lap one. Along the way both Will Sipala and Chevy Rommeney threw challenges Bock’s way. Rommeney’s night starting going south soon after coming to second losing his nose piece after contact and later dropping from the race with mechanical woes. That left Will Sipala to try and overtake Tucker Bock but the race leader was having none of it and drove the Bock Auto entry to the winners circle. Will Sipala of Manorville was runner-up in the Riteway Auto machine while Gavin Romano of Riverhead was third in the Mil-Aero Solutions entry.
In the 40-lap Gut & Go 4/6-Cylinder Enduro Joey Palmeri Jr. of Lindenhurst prevailed for the win in his J&J Towing Hyundai. Joey started 10th on the field and took the lead of the race shortly after the halfway point from Mike Mujsce Jr. of Hampton Bays who was runner-up in the Mike’s Auto Service of Quogue Honda. John Palmeri of Lindenhurst was third in his J&J Towing mount.
Coming out of retirement Michael “Cheesebox” Rommeney of Bohemia survived a hard hitting, long lasting School Bus Demolition Derby over “The Punisher” Paul Fox of Riverhead and brother Kevin Rommeney of East Meadow.
