Welch, Gyger, Sicard Take 1st Wins of 2023 Season, Gray Continues to Dominate in Tigers
N. Woodstock, NH — After the summer rains continued to pour on the Pemigewasset Valley and forced the postponement of Saturday night’s program to Sunday afternoon, the sun showed and the heat returned to White Mountain Motorsports Park. The Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Mini Special was once again characteristically spectacular as White Mountain’s four-cylinder class headlined and put on the best show of the afternoon for the crowds at hand.
Twenty-one Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Minis invaded the Mountain from the weekly championship warriors to the invaders looking for a taste of glory. The 50-lap special was led to green by Belmont’s Anthony Gavell and Littleton’s Jack Hayes as they roared across the line. The first caution flag would fly on lap 10 after young Cassie Leonard and point leader Kristian Switser ended up in the turn three tire wall with the ensuing restart also calling out the yellow with Patrick Swister, Jacob Ailes and Allen Young going into a spin cycle pile-up. With Gavell and Hayes still calling the shots out front, invading Justin ‘El Chopo’ Blakely would go around in turn four on lap 19 to reshuffle the field.
The most spectacular event of the afternoon would happen on lap 31 as Dustin Wilson went way-high in turn four, made contact with the tire barrier and rolled over two-and-a-half times to land on his lid on the frontstretch. While the driver was uninjured, the same could not be said for the Dodge Neon Wilson borrowed from Les Washburn for the afternoon. On the restart, Gavell would take off once again and claim his first White Mountain win in grand fashion by taking the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank special followed by Tyler Thompson and Chris Moulton.
After splitting the heat race and the semi feature, point leader Kasey Beattie and defending champion Quinny Welch were on the outside looking in at the start of the Foley Oil & Propane Late Model 50-lap feature. Beattie battled hard with Oren Remick and rookie Kyle Goodbout as he chased down defending Welch and Mike Jurkowski. The green-to-checkers caution-free race would see the defending champ claim his first victory of the 2023 season followed by Beattie and Jurkowski to round out the podium.
Also going for the barnburner, the Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tigers were led to green by rookies Jim Paquette and Luke Peters. Quickly coming to the front from the fifth and seventh starting positions, John Donahue and Brandon Gray made their presence known early as the two began battling it out. Gray would take over the top spot in the caution-free event and never let go to take his fourth win of the season at White Mountain. John Donahue would follow for second with Colin Cornell jumping in to take third.
The Wayne’s Market Dwarf Cars put on quite the show for the Sunday crowd in their twin 20-lap segments. The Monza-style event saw Luke Shannon once again find trouble in his first full season with the Dwarfs while defending champion Jason Wyman cleaned up the first segment to take the checkers. With the finish inverted to set the stage for segment two. Shannon earning the pole fought hard as Wyman moved his way to the front but with two to go they made contact with Wyman ending up in the tire barrier. On the restart Ethan Tyrrell got the jump on Dave Gyger but went sliding into the infield under the white flag to leave Gyger to bring it home. Dave Gyger would nab his first win of the season with just three-points followed by Jeff Ainsworth and Chad Dufour to round out the podium.
Ten Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kid’s Division machines made the Sunday trip to White Mountain. Led to green by first-year pilot Makenzi Sicard and Bentley Robbin, the Kids put on a show with Makenzi’s brother Austin coming up from third to take the lead leaving three-wide racing behind him. Austin (AJ) Sicard would take the Kid’s Division win followed by Walker Fitch and Bentley Robbin to complete the Victory Lane podium.
Next up at White Mountain Motorsports Park is Round #2 for the Central Asphalt Paving Flying Tiger Triple Crown Series on a Fourth of July Spectacular Saturday! The July 1st program is headlined by the Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tigers as they battle for their second 75-lap showdown of the 2023 season along with the Foley Oil & Propane Late Models, Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis and the Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kid’s Division. The Fourth of July Spectacular will cap off with the annual Independence Day fireworks display courtesy of Northstar Fireworks!
