(Butler Township, PA 8-11-24): Mike Pollack of Freeland, collected a fifth consecutive win in the Harry’s U-Pull-It Street Stocks Sunday afternoon at Evergreen Raceway, although the race was cut short after 18 of the scheduled 30 laps due to a medical emergency in the grandstands, and it also concluded the rest of the program which was the DW Machine & Fabricating Late Model feature.
We are very saddened to report that we lost a long-time, dedicated member of the Evergreen Raceway family as Gordon Buchman of Freeland, succumbed to heart failure while watching the Street Stock feature.
In that race his grandson, Gordon Buchman Jr., took control at the outset, jumping into the opening lap lead over pole sitter Amber Knecht. He then began to run at a steady pace that allowed him to take a few car lengths over Geary Rinehimer Jr., who had his hands full fending off Pollack.
It would take the first 10 laps for Pollack to get by Rinehimer and afterwards he set his sights on leader Buchman who was still maintaining strong and consistent laps. However, by lap 14 Pollack was able to reel in Buchman and the next time by they engaged in a torrid side-by-side battle for the top spot.
Running mere inches apart, the pair reached the midway point with Pollack on the inside and scored as the new leader. The next time by he was able to move slightly ahead although not much than that as Buchman stayed glued to him.
The race slowed on lap 18 when Rinehimer spun in the second corner. He then pitted and was able to return but before the action was to resume medical personnel were summoned behind the grandstand to assist the elder Buchman who afterwards was transported to the local hospital and passed.
Due to the unfortunate circumstances the race was official and the remainder of the show postponed.
The entire Buchman and Sones families wanted to extend their sincere thanks to all those who assisted in any way and are very grateful to all for their help in assisting.
In the Himmer Graphics Four Cylinders current point leader BJ Wambold of Nazareth raced to his second feature win of the season.
And truth be told Wambold was ready to settle for third spot but with three laps to go then leader Harry O’Neill lost power coming out of turn two and was then hit from behind by close running Johnny Bennett and unfortunately putting both out of contention.
Third at the time was Wambold who would then have to hold back a serious challenge from Jared Frye as well as his daughter, Maggie Wambold, in securing the victory.
In the INEX Legends feature Tanner Jones of Glen Gardener, NJ, took the lead from Cliff Shaw Jr., on lap five and then pulled away from there en route to his second Evergreen win of the season.
After further consideration the Late Model race will now be run on Sunday, September 15, as part of twin features for the class and not next Sunday, which was previously decided after the day’s event. An additional Late Model feature has also been added to Sunday, September 29.
