Wall Township, NJ – Eddie McCarthy of Brick, NJ scored the biggest victory of his career by winning the 66th running of the Garden State Classic 125 in the NASCAR Modified feature event on Saturday night at Wall Stadium. McCarthy earned a first place prize of $5000 plus close to $3,000 in bonus awards by winning the prestigious event.
Wall, NJ’s Tyler Ferris led the initial laps of the contest as McCarthy wrestled Howell, NJ’s Jimmy Blewett for second in the early going. After powering into second McCarthy went after the leader and took command with an inside lane pass on lap 17. Soon Blewett and Jackson’s Kyle Scisco advanced to second and third.
With the event going caution free through the first 79 laps McCarthy flexed the muscle of his No. 20 often stretching an advantage of over a half straight away. The closing laps saw four yellow flags for incidents that involved former GSC champs Steven Reed of Jackson,NJ, Derek Hopkinson of Milltown, NJ and others. The final portion of the event went off without trouble as McCarthy and Blewett were the top two followed by Carsten DiGiantomasso, Reed, and Scisco.
“I’m happy for my father about this big win,” McCarthy said. “My dad lives for this car and spends all week trying to make it faster. Bill Cole and my father are always thinking of ways to make it faster and it works!”
Former champion Mike Alcaro of West Milford, NJ won the companion 30 lapper for the Natural Design Co. Legend Cars, the first of three events that make up the Triple Crown Summer Slam for the popular division. Alcaro powered from fourth to the lead on lap six and never looked back picking up the $500 victory. Riverhead, NY’s Anthony Marsh, early leader Timmy Solomito of Islip, NY, Chevy Rommeney of Bohemia, NY and Jayden Glennerster of Calverton, NY completed the top five.
Howell, NJ’s Johnny Carpenter won his second O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stock 25 lapper of the season late in the contest after starting seventh. Carpenter outdueled Beachwood, NJ’s Elliott Wohl on a restart with five laps remaining for the win. Rob Anderton was third while Freehold. NJ’s Jared Okerson and Brian Osborn were fourth and fifth after starting 15th and 18th respectively.
Jackson, NJ’s Blake Barney was impressive in winning the 25 lap main event for the ATQMRA TQ Midgets. Brick, NJ’s Kyle Taraska rebounded from early troubles, Joey Payne, Doylestown, PA’s Jeff Kot and East Stroudsburg, PA’s Geoffrey Sutton completed the top five.
Country Night is next up at Wall Stadium sponsored by the Wall PBA featuring the NASCAR Modifieds, NASCAR Sportsman, Natural Design Co. INEX Legend Cars and the Surf Side Collision 4-Cylinders. Pit gates open at 1pm, grandstands at 3pm with racing beginning at 6pm. Adults (18+) are $25, Seniors (62+) and Military w/ID are $20, Children (7-17) are $15 with kids 6 and under being FREE!
