Wall Township, NJ – Ryan Kuhlthau of Brick and Toms River’s Neil Rutt III were big winners in NASCAR Sportsman Twin 25-lap main events in the NASCAR Local Racing Series presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts on Saturday night at Wall Stadium. The ATQMRA TQ Midgets raced in a special 30-lap Lane Family Memorial, which honored three late members of the racing photography family, with Howell’s Blake Barney taking the win.
In the first Sportsman 25-lapper, Kuhlthau rocketed to the lead early and never looked back. Sean Vuksanic and Tyler Ferris chased the leader most of the way, with just two caution flags for minor incidents slowing the pace. A lap 18 restart offered the opportunity for Ferris to charge into second and Howell’s James Blewett to advance to third. Billy Both of Rahway and Wall’s Vuksanic completed the top five.
“I was not real happy when that yellow flag waved at the end of the race,” Kuhlthau said. “I just held my line, and the car was good enough to win it. This is my first Sportsman win, so it is pretty big. I have to thank Scott, my mom and dad, and everyone who supports this car.”
The second Sportsman feature saw 16-year-old Matthew Kovacs lead the first 10 laps while Rutt and Chris Silvestri wrestled for second. Rutt soon made an inside-lane pass and then stretched his advantage until a lap 23 caution slowed the pace. A few cautions for minor incidents slowed the final laps, but Rutt was able to hang on for the win over Silvestri and Kovacs. Zach Lenardo and Kevin Davison were fourth and fifth.
“It has been a while since our last win,” Rutt said. “In fact, August must be our month because our last win came last August. I’ve been down on myself and was telling the crew I might retire. Now I feel better.”
Barney won the 30-lap race for the ATQMRA TQ Midgets after Tyler Ferris led early and Kyle Taraska wrestled him for the top spot. Barney was then able to motor into the lead on lap four and raced on to the win in the non-stop race. Geoffrey Sutton, Ferris and Joey Payne rounded out the top five.
“We’ve worked a lot on this car in the past year,” Barney said. “It shows! It was rocket fast tonight.”
Johnny Carpenter of Howell won the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stock 25-lap race, taking the lead late in the contest after the top two racers tangled and spun. Jared Okerson was sent to the rear of the field when officials determined he contributed to Patrick Force’s turn-four spin. Logan Fraser then wrestled Carpenter to the checkered flag to finish second, while Brian Osborn of Howell, Alex Rogers and Nick Bilello rounded out the top five.
Mike Alcaro of West Milford dominated the 25-lap Legend Cars feature for his 63rd career win. Thomas Schwarz, Chris Gall, Mark Tischler and Lars Wilson were scored second through fifth.
Wall Stadium will return to action this Saturday night, August 15. The NASCAR Modifieds will be in the spotlight as they compete in a 40-lap main event, with the touring ATQMRA TQ Midgets, O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks and Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder cars also in action. Qualifying is at 6:00 p.m., with main events starting at 7:30 p.m.
