Inaugural Induction Class to Be Honored on Friday, September 4
The First Class Will Celebrate the Builders and Legends of Spencer Speedway
WILLIAMSON, NY (August 21, 2026) – Race of Champions management is proud to announce the first inductees into the inaugural group that will be inducted into the Spencer Speedway “Oval of Fame,” at Spencer Speedway on Friday, September 4.
Del, Walt and Merle & the Spencer Family will lead the way into the “Oval of Fame” at their Speedway. The track opened in 1955 and the brothers operated the facility until 1993, before another owner took over and then ran into financial issues. By 1996 the Spencer’s resumed control of the facility until it was sold to Long Island businessman, John White in 2005. If it wasn’t for the Spencer’s, the Speedway would not have started nor remained here today. It is only proper to have the Spencer’s has the first inductees into the “Oval of Fame” and remembered perpetually for their efforts at the speedway and throughout the region, giving Rochester area race fans a home track.
The induction ceremony will take place as part of the season finale, which will feature the Race of Champions Modified
Series, Race of Champions Sportsman Modified Series, and Race of Champions 602 Sportsman Modified Series in their final appearances of the 2026 season at Spencer Speedway.

As we continue to move the sport forward, it’s equally important that we recognize those who built the foundation we’re standing on today,” stated Joe Skotnicki, Race of Champions. “Spencer Speedway has been a cornerstone of short track racing in our region for more than seven decades. Its history is filled with remarkable competitors, promoters, officials, volunteers and supporters who dedicated countless hours to making the speedway what it is today. Establishing the Spencer Speedway ‘Oval of Fame’ ensures their contributions will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.”
The evening’s racing program will be highlighted by the Race of Champions Modified Series competing in a 60-lap feature event paying a minimum of $6,000 to win, while the Race of Champions Sportsman Modified and 602 Sportsman Modified Series will complete an outstanding night of open-wheel competition that reflects Spencer Speedway’s rich Modified racing tradition.
The members of the inaugural Spencer Speedway “Oval of Fame” class will be announced over the coming weeks.
