Riverhead, NY May 28th.By Bob Finan
For the second time in four weeks Mother Nature has taken the checker flag at Riverhead Raceway. After watching numerous forecasts and tracking more weather apps track management decided with the predication of heavy to sever storms hitting early to late afternoon it was prudent to call off the nights racing that was to include a School Bus Figure Eight race.

Saturday dawned cloudy and foggy on Long Island with winds off the south facing waters that carried a light mist. While some weather apps had the chance of heavy storms at below 50% others had them above, but they all agreed on the timing of mid to late afternoon. Track officials reminiscent of weather app forecasts and then the actual weather and timing of rain that rolled in over Riverhead Raceway for the Miller Lite 200 WMT May 14th did not want to face a repeat of that scenario Saturday. The nationwide short track tire crisis while not a main factor in the decision did play a smaller role in the thought process.

Attention now turns to Saturday June 4th and The Flying Dutchman 90, a celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Fred Harbach and the storybook ending to his driving career when he won the final race of his career and the 1992 NASCAR Modified championship at Riverhead Raceway. Track officials have confirmed the actual X-90 Cavalier that Fred drove on September 19th, 1992 will be on hand Saturday and in fact will race in the 15-lap Eddie Partridge Vintage All Star event with Fred’s son in law AJ Kitz at the wheel. The car will be transported to Riverhead in an enclosed trailer that double as a museum to Fred Harbach and will be placed prominently in the garage area for all to access after the races.

The Crate Modified Miller Lite Triple Crown Series 40-lapper set for May 28th will be made up on a date to be announced. This Saturday they’ll run a regular 25-lap main event and be joined by the Figure Eights, INEX Legend Race Cars, Eddie Partridge Vintage All Stars and a Truck Enduro. Spectator gates open at 4:00 pm, adults $30, kids 6-12 $10, 5 & under free.
