WALL, NJ ~ Veterans Tommy Martino, Jr. of Red Bank and Derek Hopkinson of Milltown were big winners in Twin 30 lap Modified features Saturday night at Wall Stadium Speedway. It was the first win of the campaign for each racer.
In the first Modified main event Martino powered to the front early and fought off the challenges of Pine Hill’ s Joey Merlino. Just past half way Freehold’s Andrew Krause advanced to second and taunted Martino. Through several restarts Martino was up to all challenges, however, and raced to the victory. Krause, Tyler Ferris of Wall, Ron Frees of Lanoka Harbor and Merlino completed the to five.
In the Modified nightcap Hopkinson was the man to beat most of the way fighting off Tyler Truex of Mayetta early and then Merlino. Jackson’s Steve Reed charged into second late in the race and hounded Hopkinson to the finish. Merlino, Brick’s Eddie McCarthy and Howell’s Blake Barney wrapped up the top five.
Hopkinson was the big money winner on the night as he pocketed sixth place dollars in the first race, $1,075 for winning the second contest and a $500 bonus from track manager Emily Krause for posting the best total finish from the two events overall.
Racing with a heavy heart after his car owner John Webber recently passed away, Shanon Mongeau of Island Heights raced to an emotional victory in the 25 lapper for the Factory Stocks. Manchester’s Scott Riggleman, Jared Okerson of Freehold, Brian Osborn and Johnny Carpenter, both of Howell, were second through fifth.
Steven Reed of Jackson hitched a ride in the Althofer Racing No. 71 and raced to a win in the 25 lapper for the Sportsman cars. Multi-time champ Kevin Davison of Howell chased Reed to the end, with Neil Rutt III, Tyler Truex and Chris Silvestri were third through fifth.
Sal Liguori of Hazlet grabbed his first win of the year in the Fast 4 25 lap main event, leading most of the way while others battled behind him. Mike Lavery, TJ Graves, Eric Mancini and Johnny Carpenter were second through fifth.
Mike Alcaro of West Milford won his sixth main event of the year in the Legend Cars 25 lapper. Justin Emmons, Joe Parker, early leader Chris Gall and Jeff Stephens rounded out the top five.

The Modified cars will compete in a 40 lap race, while the Sportsman cars, Factory Stocks, Fast 4 cars, Legend Cars and TQ Midgets will also be in action.
