BRIDGEPORT, NJ – Down to the wire.

Garden State driver Ryan Godown utilized late-race heroics to pick up the victory in the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco ‘South Jersey Shootout’ at Bridgeport Motorsports Park Tuesday night.

Godown, of Ringoes, N.J., led only the final three tours of the 50-lap event, Round No. 4 of the STSS Modified NJ Quality Drywall South Region. He earned $5,000.

“Anthony (Perrego) ran a great race,” Godown said. “When you’re out front that long, the track did change a little bit. I was searching because I was second. He left that middle (lane) open and I found it.

“I think he just slipped up once or twice. You hate it for Anthony. We’re good buds.”

In six STSS Modified events contested this season, six different drivers have reached Bicknell Racing Products Victory Lane.

After picking the pole in the Beyea Custom Headers Redraw, Anthony Perrego – driving Vinnie Salerno’s No. 4 big-block Modified – dominated the majority of the event utilizing the extreme top lane of the four-tenths mile, high-banked oval.

Godown, after clearing Dillon Steuer for the runner-up spot on the 28th lap of the feature, began his pursuit of Perrego from more than 1.3 seconds behind.

Lap after lap, Godown narrowed the edge on Perrego, ultimately sweeping to the inside on the 47th circuit and taking command.

For Godown, the victory was 14th of his career (third on the all-time win list) but first since Nov. 12, 2022, at Boothill Speedway in Louisiana.

Perrego, of Walden, N.Y., settled for a $3,000 runner-up payday after 47 laps out front.

“The right-rear is going down,” Perrego said. “I couldn’t get off (turn) two and I was struggling some in (turns) three and four.  The year we are having, second still sucks but everything’s in one piece.”

Danny Bouc of Pipersville, Pa., completed the podium after slipping past Steuer on the 48th lap. Steuer, of Bohemia, N.Y., placed fourth despite his car momentarily popping out of gear and Alex Yankowski of Covington Township, Pa., completed the front five.

Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were Michael Maresca of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y.; Rick Laubach of Hellertown, Pa., up from 15th; 20th-starter Dominick Buffalino of Sayreville, N.Y.; and Ryan Krachun of Neshanic Station, N.J.

Bouc was the ATL Fuel Cells Hot Lap Hero with a lap of 16.134 seconds.

Heat winners were Steuer and Perrego.

Robbie Emory of Milton, Del., became the 65th different winner in STSS Sportsman history with a wire-to-wire 25-lap Belmont’s Garage South Region triumph worth $1,500.

Emory, who was a victory contender in the March STSS event before suffering engine issues, was not denied this time. Emory fought off restart challenges from Travis Hill for the win.

Elmer, N.J.’s Hill finished second, followed by Jesse Hirthler of Boyertown, Pa., with a late rally through the field from 10th starting position, 14th-starter Matt Peck of Gibbstown, N.J., and Tom Moore Jr. of Middletown, Del.

Ronnie Solomon was the JLR Technologies Sportsman Hot Lap Hero at 17.333 seconds.

Heat winners were Hill, Christopher Buffalino, Emory and Stephen Kemery. The B-Main went to Paulie Hartwig III.

The STSS fires right back into action this Thursday (July 16) at N.Y.’s Fonda Speedway with the rescheduled ‘Firecracker 50’ from July 1.  STSS Modifieds of the HYTORC of New York North Region race 50 laps with $7,776 going to the winner and STSS Sportsman race 30 laps for $1,776 in a Madsen Overhead Doors Inc. North Region points-paying race. A massive fireworks display will accompany the on-track excitement.
