After two successful practice days, Riverhead Raceway is ready to kick off the 72nd season of stock car racing Saturday evening May 7th featuring a seven division NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series program. NASCAR Modifieds will headline the lid lifter with a 50-lap feature event.
Entering the new season five of the seven track champions are returning to defend their titles. Kyle Soper of Manorville is eyeing his fourth NASCAR Modified title in the past five seasons and is hopeful of getting off to a fast start Saturday. Scott Pedersen of Shirley is ready for his Figure Eight title defense this year as will 2021 Blunderbust champion Cody Triola of Bay Shore. Jack Handley Jr of Medford will be gunning for three Super Pro Truck titles in a row this season while George Tomko Jr. of Aquebogue is the reigning INEX Legend Race Car champion.
Two championships will go vacated entering 2022 as multi-time Late Model champion Jeremy McDermott of Riverhead will take a hiatus from racing to start a new family with wife Jessica. The couple expects a baby boy Cam in late May. The Crate Modified championship will also be up for grabs this season as two-time champion Richie Davidowitz of East Moriches and his team parted ways after winning the 2021 crown.
Race teams will enter the pit area at 12 noon with practice set to start at 1:30 pm. A drivers meeting will be held by track GM/Race Director John Ellwood at 3:30 pm. General admission gates open at 4:00 pm with qualifying set for 4:30 pm. Opening ceremonies and feature event racing will commence at approximately 6:30pm. Adult admission is $30, kids 6-12 $10, 5 and under free. Pit admission is $40 with a NASCAR/\INEX license, $60 without a license.
