N. Woodstock, NH — On yet another unseasonably hot May Saturday in New Hampshire’s North Country, White Mountain Motorsports Park finally lifted the lid on Season 30 with over 100 cars in the pit area. The racing on track was just as hot as the setting sun with a first-time win in the Foley Oil & Propane Late Models, a dominating four-peat in the Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tigers and an action-packed visit from the NELCAR Legends Tour are all part of what made opening night simply exhilarating.

The Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division was first feature to roll out following qualifying action. With several new kids on the block, the competition was fierce between these youngsters but throughout, multi-time winners McKenna Merchant and Logan Farnsworth paced the field. Merchant would take the first feature win of 2022 followed by Farnsworth and newcomer Walker Fitch in the 18x, following his heat race ‘spin-cycle’ on the front stretch.

The Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis opened their 2022 season with a strong 16 car field. While mechanical woes plagued veterans Gavin McGinnis and Jack Hayes, nothing could stop the triple power of the Baumgardner Family. Daughter Jillian paced the early field only to be methodically hunted down by Father Donnie and her boyfriend Tyler Thompson. Thompson would take the lead and the win followed by Jillian and Donnie Baumgardner to round out the podium.

The NELCAR Tour Legends and Bandoleros lit up the White Mountain highbanks for their first visit in 2022. In a hotly contested 25-lap Legends feature, Devin Deshaies came out on top over the hardnosed Trevor Krouse with Joshua Parsons rounding out the podium. The Bandeleros went for 15-laps and saw youngster Mikey LaFort III take the win followed by Joey Lamay and Bradley Strickland.

The Foley Oil & Propane Late Models got off to a hot and heavy start to their 2022 campaign. Following the Semi-Feature win by North Country legend Stacey Cahoon, the youth movement showed the way. A pair of non-winners paced the entirety of the 50-lap feature with St. Johnsbury’s Kasey Beattie charging hard on the outside of Whitefield’s Jon Savage.

Just after the half-way point, Matt Morrill, attempting to pursue a podium finish, hooked into the lap car of Tom Sheehan, sending a melee into the Turn-Three retaining wall. In a shower of tires, Graniteville, Vermont’s Stephen Donahue and Whitefield’s Ben Belanger slammed the wall to avoid, ending Donahue’s night. The final ten circuits were a dog fight between Savage and Beattie, neck-and-neck to the end.

Going into Turn-One, Beattie’s tire cut down just after driving under the white flag, leaving Savage to claim his first Late Model win to a huge round of applause. Just as thrilling was the rest of the top five under a blanket behind the leaders. Alby Ovitt and Stacey Cahoon would come out second and third with Quebec’s Alexendre Tardif just edging multi-time champion Quinny Welch for fourth.

With 22 Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tigers in attendance, the first round of the J.P. Sicard Triple Crown Series certainly lived up to the hype. Even after being stuck in the back of the top ten, Shane Sicard was still the favorite, and for good reason. Coming in a three-peat winner of each Triple Crown race in 2021, he lived up to his legacy. Patiently cutting his way through traffic, once he hit the open air out front, there was no catching the Flaming Four from Barton, Vermont.

Starting out in the catbird seat, Marshfield, Vermont’s Matt Potter held to the top three for the majority of the race until the handling went away, turning his Flying Tiger into a DIRTcar Sportsman. Even pole-starter, and former Triple Crown champion, Jaden Perry was no match for Sicard, but stalked the eventual winner hoping for even the slightest bobble, ready to pounce on any opportunity to get to the front.

Shane Sicard took the fourth consecutive Triple Crown 75-lapper followed by Perry and apparent third-place finisher Michael Clark. Clark would lose the position following technical inspection of his carburetor giving Jason Woodard a podium spot. Rookie Kaiden Fisher once again proved his beyond-his-age capabilities with a strong fourth place finish followed by Stephen Donahue pulling double duty for fifth.

Rounding out the night, the Wayne’s Market Dwarf Cars went for two, 20-lap segments. Following segment one, the 10-car field was inverted with final results tabulated by totalling the finishing score of both segments. Coming up through the field in segment two, multi-time champion Jason Wyman edged out Thunder Road Late Model competitor Andy Hill with a total score of 3-points to Hill’s 4. ‘Downtown’ Bobby Brown came out third with a 5 point total.

White Mountain Motorsports Park continues the 2022 season next Saturday, May 28 with the Late Model Spring Board 100. The first 100-lapper of the season for the Foley Oil & Propane will serve as Race #1 for the Wall’s Ford Platinum Late Model Series, a three-race series with a separate $1,500 point fund for the top three at the series’ end. The full card of racing will also include the Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tigers, Woodsville Guarenty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis, Wayne’s Market Dwarf Cars and Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division. Raceday information, scheduling and prices will be available in the coming days.
