Doug Coby

WALL, N.J. – Driving the Mayhew Tools No. 7NY, Doug Coby looked to be in position to score his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour win at Wall Stadium Speedway on Saturday night. Left as one of the few tracks on the schedule that Coby hadn’t won a race, the six-time series champion charged to second, then passed Ron Silk off turn two for the lead on lap 108.

However, just a mere half-straightaway later, as they dove off into turn three, contact between Coby’s right-front tire and lapped car Anthony Nocella’s left-rear sent Coby spinning to the bottom of the track and out of the lead. He would restart just outside the top-10, charge back through, and bring the Tommy Baldwin Racing entry home in sixth position after the Jersey Shore 150, but certainly felt like at the time he was in a good spot to contend for the win.

“You certainly never know what’s going to happen on the late restarts but I think we had the best car at that point in the race heading for the end,” Coby said. “I know we put ourselves in position to make the right moves to win the race and I thought we were doing that with the opportunity there to get out front and get ready for the finish. My car was getting better at that point when I made the move to get around Ron.”

Doug Coby will be back on the track for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Mohegan Sun 100 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 15. For more information on Coby and the Mayhew Tools team, visit DougCobyRacing.com and follow the team on Facebook.
