Moodie Breaks Tie with ‘Double-O Joe’ as All-Time Flying Tiger Wins Leader

Barre, VT — A change of pace for the Thunder Road faithful saw a pit-load of teams join in for the Sunday, July 7 outing on Quarry Hill. Twenty-seven Maplefield/Irving Late Models made the special Sunday trip to the Nation’s Site of Excitement for the Jack Daniels Ready to Drink Cocktails 100, the battle serving as round two in the inaugural Squier Cup Late Model Triple Crown! While the Late Models may have been the headline, there was action aplenty Sunday evening.

In a rare show starting appearance, the Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors got the afternoon’s action started with a bang as twenty-five of the junkyard knights took to the highbanks. Two cautions before halfway wreaked havoc on the field, ending a strong run for Anderson Boyd against the turn four wall. Eddie Thompson continued his lead of the field on the restart with a rear-view full of ‘The Frickin’ Chicken’ Brodie Frazier. Frazier used a pair of lap cars to gain advantage on the outside groove and snuck away with the win by a bumper cover over Thompson with Zach Garvey joining them on the podium in third.

Twenty-nine strong, the rk Miles Street Stocks took the field under the command of Derek Farnham at the front of the field before he went into the spin-cycle off turn two to bring out the first caution on lap 3. A rough start continued with another pile-up in turn two, collecting young Landyn O’Donnell and more as casualties to the action. After stretching out, Josh Lovely launched around Patrick Tibbetts to lead before one final roadblock in turn two ended the day for Kasey Collins and Paige Whittemore. Josh Lovely again took off with the restart lead, taking his third-straight in the division followed by Jamie Davis and Parker Gagne on the podium.

Leading rookie of the year contender Logan Farrell brought the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers to start their 40-lap main event with a rear-view mirror full of division great Brendan Moodie. Moodie followed young hot-shoe Cooper French around Farrell in the opening quarter of the event followed by Cam Ouellette and Robert Gordon. Moodie made his move on lap 14, crossing over the youngster off turn two to jump underneath and take the lead on lap 17. Brendan Moodie went on to grab the win, regaining the top spot on the Flying Tiger all-time win’s list after his longstanding statistical tie with ‘Double-O’ Joe Steffen. A hard-charging Kyle Streeter motored to a runner-up finish followed by Cooper French in third.

The Maplefield/Irving Late Models finished off the evening’s program with the Jack Daniels Ready to Drink Cocktails 100, round two of the Squier Cup Late Model Triple Crown. Following heat race qualifying with one consolation round, a pair of former American-Canadian Tour champions Jimmy Hebert and Nick Sweet led the field to green. Hebert got the jump on the initial start with 2022 Thunder Road King of the Road Chris Pelkey in hot pursuit. The first caution flag would fly on lap 24 after contact with Jesse Laquerre sent Brooks Clark careening across the frontstretch.

Using the outside lane to his advantage, Hebert led through two more caution periods, all the while with Pelkey stalking him just inches off his rear bumper. Just prior to the final caution on lap 69, Squier Cup point leader Cody Blake had his day ended by an overheating engine while trouble brewed on the final restart. Pelkey got the jump on the bottom lane and, try as his might, Hebert could not power back around the former track champion. Jason Pelkey earned the Jack Daniels Ready to Drink Cocktails 100 victory over Jimmy Hebert with Scott Dragon beating Nick Sweet to the line for third.

Thunder Road is back in action this Thursday, July 11 for the rescheduled 45th Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 as part of Vermont Construction Night! The Maplefield/Irving Oil Late Models are set for a 150-lap showdown to determine the inaugural Squier Cup Triple Crown champion, all while battling reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion Cole Custer! The Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers and rk Miles Street Stocks continue their championship seasons for a three-division card with a special Thursday Post Time of 6:30pm.
