Lee, NH — A packed crowd came down to Lee USA Speedway on Friday night for the PASS Friday Night Throwdown with the locals getting the action started right! Trystin Bodwell launched into the lead for the Ridge Runners while top point chasers Kyle Dumas and Josh Hodgdon attempted to fight their way through the pack. A six car pack battled for fourth around the Lee 3/8-mile with Derek McKeen bringing out the first yellow of the night with a turn four spin. The green-white-checker finish saw Trystin Bodwell become the first repeat Ridge Runner winner of the year followed across the line by Tyler Fish and Kyle Dumas.
The MLM Diagnostic Services Crown Vics saw Anthony Garland take off ahead of point leader Josh ‘Guido’ Valliere but it was Matthew Hurteau who quickly took over the lead. Hurteau never faultered in the caution-free 20-lapper to take the win over Zach Davis and Jacob Michaud.
The New England Supermodified Series (NESS) made their Lee USA Speedway debut on Friday night with Derek Griffith and Dan Bowes leading the field to green for their 50-lap sprint. Griffith looked shot from a cannon to the lead while point leader Jeffrey Battle began to march up the outside lane from the middle of the pack. After the top three had difficulties motoring around the lap car of Mike Keddy, Battle began working on Bowes for second as Griffith continued to show the way. Battle and Jon McKennedy motored under Bowes with fifteen laps remaining as Battle continued his momentum to move up behind Griffith.
The lone caution flag flew on lap 48 with Dan Bowes blowing a left rear tire and sending him into a spin on the backstretch and into the infield retaining wall to ruin his night. A green-white-checker shootout between Jeffrey Battle and Derek Griffith saw Battle launch on the outside groove with Griffith taking second and Jon McKennedy edging PJ Stergios at the line for third.
Jeremy Davis opened up with the lead in the Kennebec Equipment PASS Modified feature as the high-point drivers ran in an eight-car gaggle deeper in the pack. By the halfway point, a six-man dance ran nose-to-tail behind third-place runner Shawn Knight with everyone looking to hold tight to the bottom. The first caution came out with fourteen laps remaining as most recent winner Chanler Harrison spun off turn two. Three more cautions would follow as Jeremy Davis and George Helliwell continued to face off at the front. Jeremy Davis would take the win at his Lee USA Speedway home-away-from-home followed by Reed Reno and George Helliwell to round out the podium.
Alexendre ‘Fireball’ Tardif and Joey Doiron brought the PASS Super Late Models to green for the Friday Night Throwdown 200 to end out Friday’s action. The big one happened early as Corey Bubar and Cole Robie made contact towards the front of the pack on the frontstretch, sending both into the wall and around to the infield grass on lap 8. Joey Doiron would find his way into the lead all alone under the restart with Sylas Ripley, Ryan Kuhn and Fireball Tardif following. Jimmy Renfrew, Jr. caught up to Doiron, using momentum on the outside groove to lead lap 29 with Doiron’s 73D content with riding in the early stages of the 200 lap feature.
Pat Corbett and Mike Scorzelli brought out the lap 50 caution, unknowingly setting off a 121-lap green flag run with Renfrew leading the way until Tardif’s turn three spin with 29 laps remaining. The leaders jumped to the infield for fresh tires and a splash of fuel to go the remaining distance. Renfrew won the race off pit road and took the jump on the restart with Doiron holding on two car lengths back. Catastrophe struck Doiron on lap 193 with a flat right rear ending his strong run and resetting the field.
One more yellow would slow the pace with three laps remaining as Gabe Brown looped his #47 machine in turn three after running the car bone-dry without taking anymore fuel. Renfrew and Derek Griffith set up a three-lap dash at the front but it was Jimmy Renfrew Jr. who earned the $7,000 payday over Derek Griffith and DJ Shaw, who came back from an early turn one dust-up to finish third.
Lee USA Speedway is off next Friday, July 31 but returns to racing action on Friday, August 7 for the third round in the Seacoast Late Model Challenge! 100 laps for the ACT Late Models are scheduled for August 7 alongside the 350 Supermodified Series, Tri-City Lining Street Stocks, Ridge Runners and MLM Diagnostic Services Crown Vics with a 7:00pm Post Time!
