BROOKFIELD, NY – Derrick McGrew Jr. won his second consecutive Crate 602 Sportsman feature at Brookfield Speedway on Thursday night.

McGrew, of Ballston Spa, N.Y., led all 25 laps after drawing the pole starting position, to claim the $1,000 victory in the ‘Madison County Fair Race.’

The winner’s share jumped from $750 to $1,000 courtesy of BDR Speed.

On Opening Night of the Madison County Fair, McGrew held off a hard charging Blaine Klinger, to go back-to-back and pull even with Klinger in the BDR Speed/Algonkin Motel championship chase.

“I could see my Dad signaling he (Klinger) was close,” McGrew said in Victory Lane. “I was just trying to hit my marks and not make any mistakes for him to take advantage of.”

McGrew would pick up the win, with Klinger taking second and Matt Richardson rounding out the podium finishers. David Hackett Jr. grabbed fourth and former Modified standout Brian Weaver – in his first race since 2017 – rounded out the top five after challenging for the lead early.

West Winfield, N.Y.’s Kenny Gates continued his hot streak at Brookfield Speedway, winning his third feature in as many races.

Despite a delay in the late stages of the race, which caused Gates’ engine to nearly vapor lock – as he explained in Victory Lane – Gates held on for the victory.

“I was basically a lame duck up front,” Gates explained. “Fortunately, Bret’s (Belden) a good racer and he ran me clean even though he was probably faster at that point.”

Belden settled for the runner-up spot with Ken Griffin, Gus Gould, and Mike Keith rounding out the top five.

Jeff Weeks won a back and forth Four Cylinder feature and Hayleigh Gates nabbed her second consecutive win in the Single Cam portion of the event.

Dan Slosek won the 15-lap All-Star Slingshot feature in a very close battle over Kirsten Swartz and Paul Holic and Ayden Goodier took home the Junior Slingshot 15-lap victory.

Racing resumes at Brookfield Speedway on Thursday, August 24 with the Crate 602 Sportsman, Pro/Street Stocks, Four Cylinders, All-Star Slingshots, and Junior Slingshots.

Brookfield Speedway management also announced the finale, which will take place on Saturday, September 9, will headline the big-block/small-block Modifieds in the ‘Madison County Nationals,’ the first ever appearance by Modifieds on the quarter-mile oval.

Brookfield Speedway is located on the Madison County Fairgrounds at 1968 Fairground Road Brookfield, NY 13314. Like Brookfield Speedway on Facebook or visit www.madisoncountyfairny.com.
