Wall Township, NJ – Veteran Steven Reed was a big winner in the NASCAR Local Racing Series presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts on Saturday night at Wall Stadium. The Jackson resident raced to victory in the 40-lap main event for the NASCAR Modifieds.
It was Reed’s second win of the season and the 44th victory of his career, which ties him for seventh overall with the late veteran Jim Hoffman.
Jackson’s Jarret DiGiantomasso and Milltown’s Derek Hopkinson wrestled for the lead early before Hopkinson took control. Defending Modified champ Tyler Truex of Mayetta slipped into second on lap seven and chased Hopkinson through half way as Reed and Howell’s Blake Barney wrestled for third.
A lapped car challenged the leaders and then spun for a yellow flag on lap 26 triggering a flurry of yellow fever. All the while Reed was turning up the pressure before advancing to second near lap 30 before racing to the outside lane on lap 34 to take the eventual win. Hopkinson’s great run ended on a sour note when he was involved in a lap 37 multi -car tangle.
Barney chased Reed to the checkered flag while DiGiantomasso, Howell’s James Blewett and Teddy Cranmer wrapped up the top five.
“That lapped car sure did make those laps a challenge,” Reed said after the race. “All in all our car has been real fast so far this year. My father and the crew have put a lot of work in the car and it shows.”
With his win in the Natural Design Co. Legend Cars, Mike Alcaro of West Milford swept all three Legend Cars 30 lap main events, including Saturday’s series finale race, to win the Legend Cars Summer Slam Triple Crown Championship.
Alcaro needed just seven laps to race into the top spot and then was forced to contend with a hard charging Timmy Solomito of Long Island all the way to the checkered flag. Kevin Nowak, Jeff Farruggia Jr. and Lars Wilson were third through fifth.
Alcaro’s Triple Crown Series championship was worth $4,500. The championship earned him $1,500, each feature win awarded $500 and he pocketed an additional $1,500 bonus for winning all three series races.
Zach Lenardo raced to victory in the 25 lapper for the NASCAR Sportsman cars, leading the entire distance. He first wrestled with Steve Whitt before Neil Rutt III took up the chase. Ryan Kuhlthau later grabbed second at the finish as Billy Both crossed the finish line in third. Matthew Kovacs was an impressive fourth and Ryder Tomaino, grandson of Modified driver Jamie Tomaino, was fifth in his first ever race.
It was a great night to be an Ashford brother as Doug Ashford won the rain postponed Surf Side Collision 4 Cylinder race from June 6 while Ian Ashford won the night’s regularly scheduled 20 lapper. In the rain postponed event Billy Pross, Ian Ashford, Mike Lavery and Eric Mancini were second through fifth. In the night’s regularly scheduled event TJ Graves, Dominick Antonelli, Neil Rutt III and Doug Ashford wrapped up the top five.
Wall Stadium will return to action this Saturday night, August 1. The NASCAR Modifieds will be in the spotlight as they compete in the “Hall of Fame 100.” The NASCAR Sportsman, O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks and Surf Side Collision 4-Cylinder’s will also be in action. Qualifying is at 6:00pm with main events starting at 7:30pm
In addition, over 50 legendary Wall Stadium drivers and personalities will be on hand for a reunion and to sign autographs starting at 4:30pm. Some of the names include Gil Hearne, Jamie Tomaino, Tony Siscone, Eddie Bohn, Dave Michel, Tony Ferrante Jr., and Tom Mauser just to name a few.
